Youth Theatre to start winter classes Feb. 2

YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown Playhouse Youth Theatre’s winter classes will be held Saturdays from Feb. 2 to March 8. Fees are $60 per student. For class times and registration, call the Playhouse box office at (330) 788-8739. Classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis, and class size is limited. The class schedule follows:

Grades 1-3, “Imagination Station”: This creative dramatics will teach students to develop physical, verbal and listening skills as well as self-expression. Students will create and perform stories on the last day of class. Instructor: Rosie Boehlke.

Grades 1-3, “The Giving Tree”: This class will explore the poems and stories of Shel Silverstein, and then rehearse and perform his well-known tale, “The Giving Tree.” Students will also design and build simple props and set pieces. Instructor: Rosie Boehlke.

Grades 4-6, “Hannah Montana, Superstar”: Inspired by the popular Disney TV series, this class will have students create secret superstar identities of their own, and then develop a "Hannah Montana" style story to perform for families and friends on the last day of class. The course features basic acting and story building skills, taught through classic theater games. Instructor: Erica Stickel.

Grades 4-6, “From the Page to the Stage”: Students will experience the play production process by using scripts from upcoming Youth Theatre productions of “Bridge to Terabithia” and “A Thousand Games.” They will rehearse and share scenes for an audience on the last day of class. Instructor: Erica Stickel.

Grades 7-12, “So, You Wanna Be An Actor?”: Covers the fundamentals of voice and body technique, improvisation, characterization, monologues, scene study and audition skills. Instructor: Joanna Andrei.

Grades 7-12: “All Singing and Dancing! All ‘Hairspray’ and ‘Wicked’”: This four-part musical theater workshop will teach students vocal technique, choreography, and how to “sell a song” Broadway style. Students will stage, rehearse and perform numbers from “Hairspray” and “Wicked” on the last day of class. Instructor: Elizabeth Rubino.
