Salem topples Struthers in 37-26 MAC win
There were only 20 baskets in the game, but the Quakers had 11 of them.
STRUTHERS — A Metro Athletic Conference girls basketball game that produced only 20 baskets, 11 by Salem High and nine by Struthers, saw the Quakers post a 37-26 victory Wednesday in the Struthers Field House.
The Quakers (9-5, 6-3), leading 26-20, pulled away 11-6 in the fourth quarter to prevail. During the game, Salem made 11 of 13 foul shots, while Struthers connected on 7 of 10 free throws.
Kelly Roelen paced Salem with 17 points. Amy Scullion chipped in with 11 and she grabbed 7 of 23 rebounds and had three assists and three steals. Roelen had four steals.
Dana Mathews sparked the Wildcats (9-5, 4-5) with 19 points. Sally Phillips added three points and she pulled down 6 of 14 rebounds.
Poland 41, Niles 29
NILES — The Bulldogs’ stingy defensive limited the Red Dragons to three points in the first quarter, seven in the second and three in the third as they built a 36-14 lead in the Metro Athletic Conference contest.
Missy Haug sparked the Bulldogs (4-11, 3-6) with 11 points. Nina Gabrelcik led the Red Dragons (6-9, 2-8) with 14 points.
East Liverpool 54, Campbell 41
EAST LIVERPOOL — The Red Devils (2-12, 0-9) led 23-21 at intermission, but the Potters (8-7, 4-5) outscored Campbell 18-15 in the third quarter and 15-3 in the final eight minutes of the Metro Athletic Conference contest.
Mate-Tay Jone-Logen paced the Red Devils with 17 points. Jayaira Grimm added nine. Ceirra Mosley sparked the Potters with 23 points. Courtney Harrison finished with 10.
Northwest 64, West Branch 57
CANAL FULTON — The Warriors (8-8, 7-4) — fell behind 35-25 at intermission and couldn’t catch up to Northwest (14-2, 10-1) in the Northeaster Buckeye Conference clash.
Amanda Stiffler, Emilee Zets and Shelly Greenawalt sparked the Warriors with 20, 13 and 10 points, respectively.
