Past incidents

The Columbiana County Jail, operated by CiviGenics of Massachusetts, has been in the news the past two years for other matters. CiviGenics was bought by Community Education Centers Inc. of Roseland, N.J., last year.

October 2006: Five inmates indicted for taking part in a riot at the jail over food that caused almost $6,000 worth of damage to the inmate cells and living areas. The head of the kitchen, who worked for another company under contract with the jail, was dismissed.

November 2006: Gary Ludt, 37, of Salineville, a corrections officer at the jail, was indicted for smuggling drugs into the lockup. He was sentenced last year to 18 months in prison. He also was fired by CiviGenics.

November 2006: Just a month after the food riot, CiviGenics announces it will have a pizza party for jail inmates during the Ohio State-Michigan football game.
