United slips past Beaver Local, 61-58
LISBON — The United High boys basketball team built a 40-37 lead heading into the fourth quarter and held on to post a 61-58 victory over Beaver Local Saturday. Jimmy Phillis paced the Golden Eagles’ (9-5) balanced scoring attack.
Jeremy Walker chipped in with 12 and McCavitt Carter finished with 10. Ethan Russell scored a game-high 22 points for the Beavers (1-12).
Track and field
KENT — Lordstown’s girls 4x200-meter relay of Jessica Reinke, Ashley Gibbs, Amanda Wickline and Kayla Ellks set a school record of 1 minute, 57.2 seconds, at a meet Saturday at Kent State. Ellks also set a school record in the 55 hurdles (9.2), finishing eighth, and she was fifth in the long jump (15 feet, 2 inches). Reinke was eighth in the long jump (14-4) and Hollie Bailey was sixth in the high jump (4-10).
For the Lordstown boys, Ryan Pal was third in the high jump (6-4); Tykie Theofilos was eighth in the 400 (53.2), and Matt Tarchick was fifth in the 3200 (11:14.4). The 4x200 relay of Jimmy Theofilos, Tykie Theofilos, Dustin Bowman and Pal finished eighth (1:38.8).
Hockey
GATES MILLS — Chagrin Falls defeated Canfield 7-1 in the Chagrin Falls Invitational hockey tournament Saturday. Canfield’s (4-12-2) goal came from Gary Tomko with assists by Tyler Buchenic and Mike Haurin. Brian Moore had 31 saves for the Cardinals.
Tyler Derbyshire had three goals and two assists to lead Chagrin Falls (15-4).
