HOWLAND — Howland SCOPE will sponsor a “Walking into Wellness” clinic with emphasis on diabetes and medical problems prevention. The clinic is open to the public from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at the Howland SCOPE Center. Professionals on site will in include staff from Diabetic Medical Supplies, representatives from Hanger Shoes, a doctor from the North East Ohio Foot & Ankle Clinic, Amanda Burnett from Senior Independence will do blood pressure readings and Shirley List will talk about the walking program at St. Joe’s at the Eastwood Mall. Genealogy workshop
YOUNGSTOWN — The Archives/Library of the Youngstown Historical Center is offering a genealogy workshop from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Feb. 9 at 151 W. Wood St. Participants will discuss basic research methods and tools, and become familiar with the resources available at the Youngstown Historical Center Archives/Library. This introduction to family history research will include vital statistics, census records, court records and newspapers, as well as local resources. There will be opportunity for hands-on experience and networking. Fee for this workshop is $10 for Ohio Historical Society members; $15 for nonmembers. Grow a great pumpkin
CANFIELD — The Ohio Valley Giant Pumpkin Growers will have a giant pumpkin growing seminar from 1 to 4 p.m. Feb. 16 at the Mill Creek Metro Parks McMahon Hall on state Route 46 across from the Canfield Fairgrounds. To register, call Parks Garden Center at (330) 533-7278. There is no charge to attend. Great pumpkin seeds will be available. The class will cover seed selection, soils, fertility, pests, pollination, pruning and irrigation.
The Ohio Valley Giant Pumpkin Growers is considered one of the world’s premier giant pumpkin clubs with 300 members in North America. The group’s members enjoy seminars, a summer patch tour and picnic, newsletters and the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth weigh-off Oct. 4 at the Parks Garden Center. Total prize money for the weigh-off is $12,000.
Burglary suspect shot
DARLINGTON, Pa. (AP) — A Beaver County man shot an apparent burglar in the head after finding him prowling in his bedroom early Friday. Police say 23-year-old Keith McCue shot Gary Brooks as he fled down the steps of the house. Police say 26-year-old Brooks and an accomplice, 41-year-old Kelvin Raines, broke into the McCue house by kicking in the front door. They took a rifle from the living room and headed upstairs. McCue was alerted by his dogs’ barking. He shot Brooks with a handgun he keeps by his bed. Police say actions were just. Raines is in Beaver County Jail facing burglary charges. Police say Brooks will face similar charges if he recovers. Brooks is being treated in a Pittsburgh hospital.
