Cleveland State pulls past Valparaiso, stays unbeaten in Horizon

CLEVELAND — Cedric Jackson scored 16 points and Cleveland State used a 16-point differential at the line to beat Valparaiso 69-63 on Saturday night.

The Vikings (14-5, 7-0 Horizon League) hit 22-of-30 free throws, with Jackson leading the way by making nine of 12. Valparaiso got to the line just seven times, hitting six.

Chris Moore added 12 points and J’Nathan Bullock 11 for Cleveland State.

Shawn Huff led Valparaiso (13-6, 4-3) with 14 points, with Brandon McPherson adding 12.

Cleveland State led 30-23 at the half and never surrendered the lead again. The Crusaders cut the advantage to four points early in the half and to six with six minutes remaining but each time they made a run the Vikings would step to the line and make big foul shots.

Wright State 53, Loyola 52

CHICAGO — Vaughn Duggins had 14 points, including the winning free throws with 22.1 seconds left, as Wright State edged Loyola.

Wright State (11-6, 4-4 Horizon League) led 51-45 with three minutes left, but the Ramblers scored the next seven points to take a 52-51 lead on a fast-break layup off a steal by Tracy Robinson with 58.7 seconds remaining.

Loyola (6-12, 2-6) had a chance to win, but a 3-point try by Justin Cerasoli missed at the buzzer.

Duggins was the only Raider in double figures.

Cerasoli came off the bench to lead Loyola with 16 points. The other Ramblers in double figures were J.R. Blount with 11 and Robinson with 10.

Ill.-Chicago 75, Detroit 65

CHICAGO — Robert Bush and Robert Kreps scored 17 apiece to lead Illinois-Chicago past Detroit.

Scott Vandermeer chipped in 13 points and had 10 rebounds for the Flames (10-8, 4-3 Horizon League), while Tori Boyd added 12 and Josh Mayo had 11. Kreps came off the bench to hit 9-of-10 free throws and add seven assists.
