‘Be a Heart Hero’ program scheduled for Feb. 7

YOUNGSTOWN — Humility of Mary Health Partners is conducting its seventh annual “Be a Heart Hero” program on Feb. 7 from 4:30 to 8 p.m. at Mr. Anthony’s, 7740 South Ave., in Boardman. “Heart Hero” is a community program dedicated to increasing knowledge of cardiovascular health. This year’s event focuses on the importance response times play in addressing cardiac issues, and includes a presentation entitled “When Minutes Matter” by cardiologist and St. Elizabeth Cardiology Section Chief, Dr. Wahoub Hout. In addition, Regional Learning Center instructor and emergency medical technician, Mike Kerr, will discuss the importance of Automated External Defibrillors (AEDs). There will also be free health screenings, including stroke screenings blood pressure. The cost is $18 per person for the general public and $23 for professionals desiring contact hours. Patient simulation lab
to provide training

WARREN — St. Joseph Health Center will open a new patient simulation laboratory at 11 a.m. on Friday. The laboratory will provide a training experience that is anatomically realistic and designed to advance the training of medical students, interns, residents, emergency medical technicians and hospital staff personnel.

The event will include a brief blessing ceremony and demonstrations of the new SimMan, the computerized human patient simulator that actually breathes and speaks. He has heart, breath and bowel sounds and pulses that can be felt. He has a unique patented airway that allows for intubations and multiple Advanced Life Support skills. Health care professionals can perform CPR on SimMan, or even shock him with defibrillators. And, if necessary, they can make him expire — all for the purpose of putting medical students in a realistic situation.

subject of workshops

Area residents interested in pursuing a career in health care can attend free health care career workshops in Youngstown and/or in Salem presented by Northeast Ohio HealthForce.

Anthem event for women

BOARDMAN — Anthem Insurance’s Healthy Woman event is Wednesday, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Mr. Anthony’s, 7740 South Ave. There will be exhibits and health screenings provided in part by Humility of Mary Health Partners. Session topics include healthy eating, preventing colon cancer, strength training and what is metabolic syndrome. Lunch at noon will be followed by the keynote speaker, Dr. Barbara McFarland, a psychologist, author, trainer and motivational speaker. Program planned
on better health

VILLA MARIA, Pa. — Villa Maria Education and Spirituality Center will present the program, “Creating Better Health in the New Year,” from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Feb. 13 at Villa Maria Community Center.

The emphasis will be on simple, practical ways to make a difference in your health and the health of those around you. The class includes discussion on Juice Plus, a nutritional program designed to lower your risk of chronic degenerative diseases.

Janee Kuta-Iliano, a preventative health educator who also is certified as a raw food chef and instructor, will demonstrate food preparations and talk about the therapeutic benefits of the foods prepared.
