University’s STEM college to host meeting
YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown State University’s College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics will serve as host for the winter meeting of the Advanced Manufacturing Initiative on Feb. 5 in Room 2400 of Moser Hall.
Martin Abraham, STEM dean, will discuss how the new college can benefit local manufacturers. The session is set from 7:30 to 9 p.m.
The number of jobs in the technical fields is growing nationally at five times the rate of other occupations, while the number of students entering the field is declining.
Locally, Mahoning Valley manufacturers are seeking innovative solutions and must make technologically advanced improvements to effectively compete in the global economy.
YSU’s newly created STEM college is addressing those needs by realigning all technically-relevant programs into a single academic unit. The university feels well-positioned to not only meet the work-force needs of local employers, but also to create interdisciplinary teams of professors and students to conduct cutting edge research and development for local companies.
Those preparations will be outlined by Abraham at the meeting.
To register, companies should call Steve Katros at (330) 941-3009 or e-mail him at sfkatros@ysu.edu.
Parking will be available in the parking deck at the corner of Lincoln and Fifth avenues. Reservations are required for parking purposes.
