Liberty’s fourth quarter run too much for Flashes, 72-62


Girard and Hubbard also earned TAC victories.

LIBERTY — The Liberty High basketball team posted a late 10-0 run Friday to defeat Champion, 72-62.

The Leopards headed into the fourth quarter with a four-point lead. Ahead 48-45, Liberty made its run and the Golden Flashes (9-3, 3-3) weren’t able to recover in the Trumbull Athletic Conference contest.

Isaiah Bell, who scored eight of his points in the final period, sparked the Leopards with 25 points and pulled down eight rebounds.

Floyd Showers chipped in with 13 points. He also had four assists and two steals.

Brian Francis added 10 points, while Jamon Wagner grabbed 10 of 40 rebounds and he had six assists and two steals.

Joe Cvengros led the Golden Flashes with 18 points. Markel Vaughn chipped in with 15 and he pulled down five of 22 rebounds and had three assists.

Girard 51, LaBrae 36

GIRARD — Brett Cubellis scored 18 points and Marty Brinker added 11 to lead Girard, which took a 35-15 lead after three quarters.

Anthony Guerrieri added six rebounds for the Indians (2-10, 2-4 TAC).

Cameron Truss had 12 points and Mike Morris added 11 for LaBrae (3-9, 2-4).

Hubbard 62, Brookfield 40

HUBBARD — The Eagles (8-4, 4-2 TAC) rushed out to a 17-3 lead in the first quarter and they were in command 33-14 at intermission.

Corey Hitt and Bobby Thompson paced the Eagles with 12 points apiece. Kurtis Drummond added 11.

Nate Rosario sparked the Warriors (2-10, 0-6) with 14 points. Ryan Shugarte chipped in with 12.

Cornerstone Christian 57

YOUNGSTOWN — The Eagles (9-5, 3-2) held a 47-42 lead going into the fourth quarter of the East Suburban Conference game and held on for the victory.

Victor Shaw scored 13 points for the Eagles while John Pecchia, Olonzo Johnson and David Colbert each scored 12.

Sam Radtke led the Patriots with 22 points.

Mathews 70, Bristol 46

BRISTOLVILLE — Colin Bowser had 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists to lead Mathews (5-7, 2-4 Northeastern Athletic Conference), which outrebounded Bristol 45-14.

Rick Sommers had nine points, nine rebounds and four assists. Jesse Hardval added 10 points and six rebounds.

Jeremy Tuney had 21 points for Bristol (1-11, 1-6).

Northwest 70, West Branch 57

CANAL FULTON — John Krzynowek tossed in 24 points including five 3-point goals to lead Northwest past West Branch.

Vic Pappas and Steve McNeely each scored 16 points to pace the Warriors (9-5).
