Institute promotes journalism advising

RESTON, Va. — The American Society of Newspaper Editors is offering a free, two-week summer institute for high school teachers interested in being journalism advisers.

As part of a national effort to strengthen scholastic newspapers and spark a passion for journalism, 175 teachers from across the state will be selected to attend the Reynolds High School Journalism Institute.

Air transportation, lodging, meals, materials, tuition and three graduate or continuing education credits will be covered with a grant from the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation.

Teachers from, high schools without scholastic media or schools that have struggling journalism programs are especially encouraged to apply.

The institute will actually take place at five accredited journalism schools.

Locally, the program will be offered at Kent State University from July 6-18. Other locations are Arizona State University, the University of Nevada at Reno, the University of Texas at Austin and Washington and Lee University in Virginal.

A brochure and application may be downloaded from hsj.org. Filing deadline is Feb. 29.
