YOUNGSTOWN — The Chinese Association of the Greater Youngstown Area will celebrate the Chinese New Year (Lunar Year of the Rat) on Feb. 3 in the Chestnut Room of Kilcawley Center on the Youngstown State University campus. Dinner is at 5:30 p.m., followed by entertainment at 7 p.m. Entertainment includes the Lion Dance, Chinese Kung Fu show, Chinese songs, ballroom dancing and Erhu performance. Program targets Hispanics
YOUNGSTOWN — The Salvation Army, with support from Youngstown State University, will hold it second College Summit program targeting Hispanic high schoolers on Thursday. The Educators and Community Helping Hispanics Onward (ECHHO) program will run from 6 to 8 p.m. at 1501 Glenwood Ave. Fifteen colleges and universities will participate, setting up tables with representatives from their respective institutions on hand to explain what educational programs they have to offer. Although the program is geared to Hispanic students, it is open to any student and parent seeking college information. Pre-registration isn’t required.
Summer employment
GREENVILLE, Pa. — State Sen. Robert Robbins of Greenville (R-50th) is looking for Pennsylvania college students seeking summer employment with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and Pymatuning State Park. Applicants have until Feb. 11 to provide their résumés and personal data sheets to Robbins’ Greenville or Meadville offices. The forms will then be forwarded to the appropriate state office.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old and enrolled in college for the fall semester of 2008. The positions are full-time and will pay $10.99 per hour until July 1 and $11.32 per hour thereafter.

Kennedy open house
HERMITAGE, Pa. — Kennedy Catholic High School, 2120 Shenango Valley Freeway (U.S. Route 62) will hold an open house from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Jan. 27. The public is invited to meet the faculty and staff and tour the school. The “Unity Classic,” with teams composed of players from all the parochial schools, have the opportunity to compete with, instead of against, each other. Mooney open house
YOUNGSTOWN — Cardinal Mooney High School, 2545 Erie St., will hold an open house from noon to 3 p.m. Feb. 3. Members of the faculty and administration will be on hand to explain the curriculum, new course offerings for the 2008-09 school year and financial aid opportunities. Students will be featured in various demonstrations and projects, and there will be guided tours and information on registration procedures. New student registrations also will be accepted. The alumni association will sponsor a “Tuition Drawing” for two $500 scholarship prizes, and the Cardinal Mooney Home and School Association will host a pasta dinner in the cafeteria from noon to 4 p.m. Takeouts will be available.

MLK Day speaker
SHARON, Pa. — Elliott Lewis, a freelance television news reporter from Washington, D.C., author and diversity speaker, will bring his views on diversity issues to the Forker Lab at Penn State Shenango, 147 Shenango Ave., at noon Wednesday. The free, public program, free and open to the public, is being held in celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Westminster service
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. — Wendell G. Freeland, a member of Westminster College’s board of trustees and an Allegheny County attorney, will speak at a Service of Remembrance and Celebration in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at 7 p.m. Jan. 27 in Wallace Memorial Chapel on campus. The service is open to the public.
Freeland has served as president of the Urban League of Pittsburgh, senior vice president of the National Urban League, chairman of the board of governors of the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies and the board of trustees of the University of Pittsburgh.
Preschool registrations
POLAND — Holy Family Preschool, 2731 center Road, is now accepting registrations for the 2008-09 school year. The school offers a pre-kindergarten program for 4- and 5-year-olds as well as preschool for 3- and 4-year-olds. The pre-kindergarten program runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, offering language arts, math, science, religion, music and more. The preschool program meets from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday and offers language arts, math, music, simple science, religion, large motor activities and more.
