TOP 25 ROUNDUP Tuesday’s other games
MEN
No. 24 Clemson 70, North Carolina St. 54
CLEMSON, S.C. — Terrence Oglesby had four 3-pointers to lead Clemson. Oglesby hit three 3-pointers in double overtime to save the Tigers (14-3, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) last Saturday night in a 97-85 victory over Florida State. This time, the freshman’s long-range touch began a run of six consecutive first-half 3s for Clemson that broke things open. Oglesby, Cliff Hammonds and K.C. Rivers each had two baskets in the surge, which turned a three-point game into a 32-21 lead the Tigers would not give up. Hammonds led Clemson with 14 points, while Trevor Booker had 13 and Oglesby 12. North Carolina State (11-5, 0-2) had come off an embarrassing 93-62 loss to No. 1 North Carolina to start the ACC season last Saturday. And the Wolfpack apparently couldn’t correct things quickly enough before facing Clemson. Freshman J.J. Hickson, the Wolfpack’s top scorer at better than 16 points a game, was held to four points. North Carolina State had a season-high 23 turnovers. Courtney Fells had four 3-pointers and led the Wolfpack with 19 points.
WOMEN
No. 1 Connecticut 63, Syracuse 59
SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Maya Moore scored all 13 of her points in the second half and grabbed 17 rebounds for Connecticut. It was the 29th straight regular-season victory for Connecticut (16-0, 4-0 Big East), but unlike the Huskies’ first 15 games of the season it was a struggle to the end. Syracuse (14-3, 2-2) was within a basket with 74 seconds to play before the Huskies sealed it. Mel Thomas led UConn with 15 points, Renee Montgomery had 14, and Kaili McLaren a season-high eight. Tina Charles, who had four straight double-doubles, finished with six points and seven rebounds. Chandrea Jones led the Orange with 18 points and Nicole Michael had 13. Fantasia Goodwin, Syracuse’s second-leading scorer at 14.3 points, finished with seven points and had only three rebounds, seven below her season average. Syracuse, which shot 48.5 percent (16-for-33) in the first half and led by as many as nine, went cold after Michael’s layup gave the Orange a 41-32 lead with 18:40 left. Syracuse went 3-for-14 and failed to get a basket for 8:20 as the Huskies stormed back with a 19-4 run despite some sloppy ballhandling.
No. 5 Rutgers 57, Georgetown 47
WASHINGTON — Essence Carson scored 18 points and had 10 rebounds and Rutgers held off Georgetown. Matee Ajavon and Myia McCurdy each added 11 points for Rutgers (14-2, 4-0 Big East), which has only eight healthy players on its roster. The Scarlet Knights opened up a double-digit lead in the first half, but couldn’t put away the Hoyas (10-6, 0-3). Rutgers made just one field goal over the final 61⁄2 minutes, but won their ninth straight game. Georgetown’s Jaleesa Butler scored 14 points to lead the Hoyas.
