NHL ROUNDUP | Tuesday’s games
Blue Jackets 3, Canucks 2
COLUMBUS — Jason Chimera scored a second-period goal and Pascal Leclaire made it stand up with 25 saves for the Blue Jackets, who set a franchise record with their sixth straight home win. Nikolai Zherdev had a goal and an assist for the Blue Jackets, who have won three in a row overall, all at home. Ron Hainsey also had a goal for Columbus, which now hits the road for a five-game road trip. Daniel Sedin and Kris Beech had the goals for Vancouver, which had given up just one goal in winning the two previous meetings with the Blue Jackets this season. Beech was picked up off waivers from the Blue Jackets on Thursday. Columbus surpassed the mark of five consecutive home wins, set last year while moving to 16-6-4 at Nationwide Arena this season. The Blue Jackets, who didn’t win their 16th home game a year ago until March 20, came in tied for second in the NHL for the best home record.
Canadiens 3, Islanders 1
UNIONDALE, N.Y. — Tomas Plekanec scored in each of the first two periods, and Cristobal Huet stopped 17 shots for Montreal. Plekanec netted an even-strength goal in the first, when Huet faced only one shot, and added a short-handed tally in the second as the Canadiens won for the sixth time in nine games (6-1-2). Huet bounced back from a sub-par game for him and his teammates Saturday in a 4-1 road loss to the New York Rangers, when he was pulled after allowing four goals on 28 shots through two periods. His only blemish against the Islanders came when Richard Park smacked a rebound past him with 9:04 left. Park’s first goal in 11 games brought New York within 2-1. Alex Kovalev’s 20th goal, scored into an empty net with 27.5 seconds left, sealed it. Rick DiPietro stopped 19 shots for the Islanders.
Capitals 4, Senators 2
WASHINGTON — Alex Ovechkin scored the tiebreaking goal on a third-period power play and the Capitals completed a season sweep of Ottawa. Ovechkin collected Brooks Laich’s long rebound between the circles and pushed in a knuckling shot that glanced off the right leg pad of Ottawa’s Ray Emery at 9:11. Washington used Ovechkin’s team-leading 34th to seal its fourth win this season against the Senators, whose 62 points are second-most in the NHL. The Capitals hadn’t swept Ottawa since 1995-96. Alexander Semin scored twice, and Mike Green also tallied for the Capitals. Dean McAmmond and Wade Redden had goals for Ottawa. Both teams played without key offensive personnel out with shoulder injuries. Ottawa forward Dany Heatley, the team’s second-leading scorer with 25 goals and 31 assists, sat out his second game and will miss up to six weeks with a separated right shoulder. Washington center Michael Nylander, whose 37 points are second-most on the Capitals, will undergo season-ending surgery Wednesday to repair a torn left rotator cuff.
Avalanche 3, Lightning 0
TAMPA, Fla. — Jose Theodore made 22 of his 32 saves in the third period, leading the Avalanche. Theodore picked up his 24th career shutout, and first since Feb. 28, 2004, against Carolina. He had gone 109 games without recording a shutout. Jeff Finger and and Paul Stastny had power-play goals for the Avalanche, who have won three games in a row. Milan Hejduk added an empty-net goal with 1:34 left. Tampa Bay’s Vincent Lecavalier was held without a point for the third straight games, his longest drought this season. The Lightning have lost 12 of 15.
Thrashers 5, Red Wings 1
DETROIT — Marian Hossa scored three goals and Kari Lehtonen made 46 saves to lift Atlanta. Hossa scored the Thrashers’ first three goals, notching his seventh career hat trick, and the first in nearly a year — Jan. 16, 2007. Eric Perrin and Slava Kozlov also scored, while Tobias Enstrom, Ilya Kovalchuk and Mark Recchi each added two assists for Atlanta. Nicklas Kronwall scored for NHL-leading Detroit, which has lost three straight. Chris Osgood stopped 13 shots before being pulled in favor of Dominik Hasek less than halfway through the game.
