AKRON — Akron has been named as the site for the annual mid-winter conference to be held Jan. 24-27 by the Department of Ohio Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ladies Auxiliary.

The VFW will be based at the Radisson Hotel, 20 W. Mill St., with Commander Roger Frye presiding over meetings, and the Ladies Auxiliary will be at the Hilton Akron/Fairlawn Hotel, 3180 W Market St., where President Marti Bridges will preside.

A highlight of the conference will be the Voice of Democracy Awards Banquet on Saturday night, and the Patriot’s Pen Essay competition.

Exhibit features works
of women artists

HOWLAND — A celebration party will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Trumbull Branch of the Butler Institute of American Art as a prelude to the opening of the YWCA of Youngstown’s Women Artists: A Celebration art show .

Featured will be live music and hors d’oeuvres, and approximately $1,000 in merit prizes will be awarded. Admission to the party is $35 at the door, or by calling the YWCA at (330) 746-6361.

M. Katherine Hurley of Cincinnati, acclaimed landscape artist, was a judge for the more than 130 pieces created by 75 women artists and submitted for the exhibit. The art show will be open to the public during museum hours until Feb. 9.
