“Andrew Jenks, Room 335” (7 p.m., Cinemax): To learn about America’s elderly, 19-year-old filmmaker Andrew Jenks moved into a Florida assisted-living facility for his summer vacation. In his documentary, Jenks follows several residents through their days, which he discovers consist of more than just playing bingo and watching “Jeopardy!” Jenks, a student at New York University, chronicles the wit, energy, kindness and frailty of the 80- and 90-somethings he meets.

“American Idol” (8 p.m., Fox): Over its incredible run, television’s No. 1 show has proven to be a bullet-proof ratings Godzilla. And now it’s also strike-proof. While other prime-time favorites shut down because of the writers’ walkout, it returns in all its musical glory, looking to add a little warmth to TV’s winter of discontent. However, the show is coming off a lackluster sixth season remembered more for a scrawny teenager’s hair-raising experiments than for breakout stars. Producers have promised to atone for their missteps, but we — not Simon, Paula or Randy — will be the judge of that. As always, the journey begins with those ridiculous audition sessions. Break out the earplugs and enjoy.

“Reno 911!” (10:30 p.m., Comedy Central): The not-so-good men and women of the fictitious police force are back for another ride.

“10 Items of Less” (11 p.m., TBS): Paper or plastic? The late-night comedy “10 Items or Less” returns with a batch of fresh episodes that looks at life behind the scenes of an offbeat family-run grocery store. The show, starring John Lehr, mixes improvisation with loosely scripted dialogue.
