Flyers 6, Capitals 4

WASHINGTON — Mike Knuble had his first two-goal game of the season as Philadelphia beat Washington. The Flyers have won seven of their last nine games. Washington’s Alex Ovechkin scored a goal in his first game since signing the richest contract in NHL history. The Flyers took a 4-1 lead and chased goalie Olie Kolzig in the second period. The Capitals cut the deficit to 4-3 before Mike Richards put in a rebound with 11:37 remaining in the game to restore Philadelphia’s two-goal lead. Michael Nylander’s 200th NHL goal with 6:51 to play pulled the Capitals within one, but Kimmo Timonen added an empty-netter in the final minute. James Dowd and R.J. Umberger also scored for the Flyers, who played their third game in four days. Alexander Semin and Mike Green had goals for the well-rested Capitals, who had played only once in seven days. Washington had won four of five before playing its second game in a season-high, five-game homestand.

Avalanche 4, Panthers 3, SO

SUNRISE, Fla. — Milan Hejduk scored the winning goal in the shootout, lifting Colorado over Florida. Andrew Brunette had two goals for Colorado, which dealt Florida its sixth straight home loss. The Avalanche have eight straight road wins against the Panthers. Marek Svatos and Wojtek Wolski both shot wide of the net for Colorado before Hejduk’s wrister got by Tomas Vokoun. Svatos also scored in regulation and Jose Theodore made 30 saves for Colorado. Nathan Horton, Stephen Weiss and Olli Jokinen failed to score for Florida in the shootout. Jokinen, David Booth, and Jay Bouwmeester had goals for the Panthers, who rallied from three one-goal deficits. Vokoun stopped 37 shots.

Canucks 4, Blues 3, SO

ST. LOUIS — Daniel and Henrik Sedin combined for five points, and Alex Edler decided a shootout for the second time in four games in Vancouver’s victory over St. Louis. Daniel Sedin had a goal and two assists, and twin brother Henrik had a goal and an assist for the Canucks, who rebounded from consecutive losses to Phoenix and San Jose and snapped a three-game road losing streak. Low-scoring defenseman Christian Backman had a goal and an assist, and Paul Kariya had two assists for the Blues, who were 2-2 during a stretch of four games in six days. Backman scored his first goal of the season and set up Keith Tkachuk’s breakaway goal in the second period. Taylor Pyatt assisted on both of Vancouver’s first-period goals, but left late in the period when he was struck in the face by the puck. He didn’t return. Brad Boyes’ 25th goal ended a 2-for-43 drought on the power play for St. Louis.

Islanders 3, Senators 1

OTTAWA — Marc-Andre Bergeron got his second power-play goal of the game early in the third and Mike Comrie scored later in the period, leading New York over Ottawa. Rick DiPietro made 31 saves for New York, which won its second game in a row to finish 2-1-2 on its five-game road trip, the team’s longest of the season. The Islanders hadn’t beaten the Senators in Ottawa since March 15, 2003. Daniel Alfredsson scored a power-play goal in the second for Ottawa, which ended a four-game winning streak that included a 3-2 victory over NHL-leading Detroit on Saturday. Senators center Jason Spezza left the game following the first period after he was flattened by an open-ice hit by Islanders defenseman Freddy Meyer early in the game. His linemate, Dany Heatley, is expected to be out up to six weeks with a dislocated right shoulder.

Wild 4, Coyotes 1

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Josh Harding stopped 26 shots for Minnesota. Pavol Demitra, James Sheppard, Eric Belanger and Marian Gaborik scored for the Wild, winners of three straight. Minnesota has beaten Phoenix seven straight times, outscoring the Coyotes 21-8. Shane Doan scored a power-play goal for Phoenix.

Oilers 2, Flames 1

EDMONTON, Alberta — Ales Hemsky and Shawn Horcoff each had a goal and an assist, and Edmonton stretched its winning streak to a season-high four games. Daymond Langkow had the lone goal for Calgary.

Ducks 4, Sharks 3, OT

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Doug Weight tied the game with 28 seconds left in regulation, and Francois Beauchemin scored 33 seconds into overtime to give Anaheim the victory. Todd Bertuzzi and Corey Perry had the other Anaheim goals. Jeremy Roenick had a goal and an assist for the Sharks.

Blackhawks 3, Predators 2, SO

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Patrick Sharp scored a second-period goal and then netted the winner in the shootout, sending Chicago over Nashville. Sharp and Patrick Kane and Sharp had goals in the tiebreaker, helping the Blackhawks snap an eight-game losing streak. Robert Lang also scored for the Blackhawks. Radek Bonk scored in the shootout for the Predators, and Marek Zidlicky and David Legwand had Nashville’s regulation goals.
