Resistant bacteria talk
HERMITAGE, Pa. — Dr. Carlene A. Muto, director of infection control with UPMC Presbyterian and assistant professor in the division of infectious diseases with the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, will present “Taking the Mystery out of MRSA” on Jan. 23 at 6:30 p.m. at Hickory High School. MRSA (methicillin-resistant staphlococcus aureus) are bacteria that have developed resistance to antibiotics. Trauma center listing
YOUNGSTOWN — St. Elizabeth Health Center has been reverified as a Level I Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons’ Committee on Trauma. This places St. Elizabeth among about five percent of hospitals nationwide that provide this level of care for critically injured patients, and re-establishes it as the only Level 1 center between Akron and Pittsburgh. A Level I Trauma Center provides the highest level of specialty expertise and meets strict national standards.
Kids wellness program
SALEM — “Fit Kids,” a Salem Community Center wellness program, is offered for children in two different age groups: 5-8 and 9-12. The six one-hour classes, which offer educational lectures and lots of physical exercise, will be at the Salem Community Center, 1098 N. Juvenile arthritis event
CLEVELAND – The Arthritis Foundation, Northeastern Ohio Chapter’s first juvenile arthritis family day and potluck is Jan. 20 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Brecksville Community Center, Human Services Building, 1 Community Drive, Brecksville. A Meet and Greet for families and youth; a Kids’ Korner with coloring and kids activities; a raffle drawing; games, prizes and more are planned. The event is free. Survivor scholarships
CANFIELD — Feb. 20 is the deadline for applying for American Cancer Society, Ohio Division Youth Survivor College Scholarships for the 2008-09 academic year.
The scholarships are not intended for family members or caregivers of cancer survivors. Applicants will be notified later this year of their funding status. Last year, in the 13 counties served by Northeast Ohio, 10 scholarships were awarded.
Scholarship applicants must be residents of Ohio, a United States citizen, diagnosed with cancer before age 21, under the age of 25 at the time of application, and plan to attend an accredited university or community college in the United States.

Salem offers classes
SALEM — The Salem Community Center, 1098 N. Ellsworth Ave., is offering toddler tumble and swim classes and indoor triathlon training. the toddler tumble and swim class, for children ages 1-5, is on Thursdays from Jan. 17 to Feb. 21 from 10 to 10:45 a.m. The cost is $50 for SCC members and $55 for non-members. The indoor triathlon training for biking, swimming and running is on Sundays from Jan. 13 to April 6 from noon to 1 p.m., ending with an indoor triathlon on April 13. The cost is $65, which includes the $15 indoor triathlon registration fee. Register by calling (330) 332-5885.
