Sorority ball to raise funds and celebrate 100th anniversary


Proceeds will support community organizations and provide scholarships.

YOUNGSTOWN — Members of Epsilon Mu Omega and Delta Delta Chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. are combining their efforts to sponsor a gala Pink Centennial Snowflake Ball from 7 to 11 p.m. Feb. 9 at the Youngstown Club, 201 E. Commerce St.

The purpose of the event is to raise funds for scholarships, to support other service organizations and to celebrate the 100 years of service provided by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.

Formal attire is suggested for the evening, which will include dinner, dancing to the music of the Total Package Band and a cash bar. Past presidents will be singled out for recognition during a brief presentation.

Historical background

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was founded in 1908 as America’s first Greek-letter organization established by black college women. After its incorporation in 1913, the sorority became the channel for selected college-trained women to improve the socioeconomic conditions throughout the world through volunteer service.

The sisterhood cultivates and encourages high scholastic and ethical standards, promotes unity and friendship among college women, strives to alleviate problems concerning girls and women, and maintains a progressive interest in college life.

Headquartered in Chicago, the sorority is composed of 170,00 women from all areas of the world, and membership is open to women of high ethical and scholastic standards who are pursuing or have completed courses leading to a degree in an accredited college or university.
