Sebring rallies past Lowellville, 32-28

SEBRING — Nursing a one-point lead after three quarters, the Sebring High girls basketball team outscored Lowellville, 12-9, down the stretch Saturday to win 32-28.

Megan Allcorn paced the Trojans with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Jill Bragg added seven points and she also had 12 rebounds. Julia Grimsley and Taylor Ward each had three assists and three steals.

Ali Grapevine sparked the Rockets (7-7 6-2 Inter Tri-County League Tier Two) with 17 points.

Youngstown Christian 42,
Chaney 38

YOUNGSTOWN — The Eagles (3-11) were leading by 12 points with three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, but the Cowboys (4-7) rallied to cut the deficit to 40-38 with 50 seconds left.

Cayline Hayes then tossed in two free throw for Youngstown Christian with 20 seconds to go for the victory.

Chelsey Tate scored 13 points for the Eagles. Kristi Cooper, who scored eight of Youngstown Christian’s 21 points in the third quarter, finished with 11 and she had nine steals. Hayes grabbed 11 rebounds.

Tiara Heard led the Cowboys with 10 points.

Howland 80, Niles 32

NILES — Alexa Williams, Allie Airhart, Kelly Barzak and Jessica Wilson shared 62 points in leading Howland in the Metro Athletic Conference game.

The Tigers (11-2, 7-1) built a commanding 36-15 lead by intermission and the Red Dragons (6-6, 2-4) couldn’t recover.

Williams sparked the Tigers with 24 points. Airhart added 14, Barzak 13 and Wilson 11. Nina Gabrelcik led the Red Dragons with 12 points.

Struthers 60, Campbell 34

STRUTHERS — Halle Minchin Skook, Dana Mathews and Helen Hird shared 35 points leading Struthers High School (8-2, 3-2 MAC) to a victory over Campbell (2-9, 0-6).

The Wildcats rolled to a 33-14 lead by intermission and put the game out of reach 49-23 heading into the fourth quarter.

Skook and Mathews each scored 12 points and Hird finished with 11. Nate Tay Jones and Jayallira Grihm scored 12 and 10 points respective for the Red Devils.

Canfield 66, Poland 18

POLAND —Senior Bryanne Halfhill scored 21 points, senior Kate Popovec had 13 and Melissa West, also a senior, added 11 for Canfield in the Metro Athletic Conference game.

The Cardinals took a 9-2 lead after one quarter before widening the gap to 22-5 at halftime.

The teams will meet again Feb. 9 in Canfield.

Missy Haug had five points for Poland, whose two wins are over Campbell and East Palestine.

Salem 40, East Liverpool 31

SALEM — Salem jumped out to a 27-19 halftime lead and then outlasted East Liverpool.

The Quakers were led by Brittany Ritchie with 12 points while Kelly Roelen added 11 and Katie Scullion had 10. Ceirra Moxley and Courtney Harrison each had nine points for East Liverpool.

Ursuline 65, Wilmington 23

YOUNGSTOWN — Jaleesa Beverly scored 16 points and made five rebounds, two blocks and two assists for the Irish (7-5).

Kaneesha Tensley netted 12 points.

Kara Kendell led the Greyhounds (6-6) with six points.

Hathaway Brown 55,
Cardinal Mooney 23

SHAKER HEIGHTS — Angela Groves had 13 points and Alexis Dobbs tacked on 12 for Hathaway Brown (11-3), which took advantage of Mooney’s inability to score from the field.

Hathaway Brown’s buzzsaw limited Mooney players such as Sarah Pelini and Dayna Daltorio to roughly seven points below their averages. Jessica Farragher had eight points for the Cardinals (8-6).

The Blazers — a Div. II state semifinalist last season —has losses to South Euclid Regina, Canfield and Columbus Afrocentric.

Perry 65, Fitch 48

AUSTINTOWN — Fitch stayed with Perry for the first half, but fell behind in the third quarter and couldn’t catch up.

The Falcons (4-9, 1-5) deadlocked Perry 22-22 at halftime, but were outscored 22-8 in the third period.

Kala Hanuschak led Fitch with 14 points, while Courtney Ingersoll led Perry with 21 points.

Brookfield 61, Newton Falls 34

NEWTON FALLS — The Warriors (10-2, 6-1 Trumbull Athletic Conference ), ahead 34-18 at halftime, put the game away with a 13-5 surge in the third quarter.

Morgan Bonekovic sparked the Warriors with 15 points. She also blocked 10 shots and grabbed nine rebounds.

Kodi Brenner and Lauren Gentilte chipped in with 13 and 10 points respectively. Kelly Jones had seven assists.

Kelsey McGregor led the Tigers (7-6, 5-3) with 19 points.
