HISTORIC BUILDING

Downtown New Castle

The building at the corner of Croton Avenue and East Washington Street will reopen this spring as the new home of InfoCision. It has had a long and storied past:

Before 1911 the land is used as a livery stable.

From 1911 to 1913, a three-story neoclassical-style brick building is constructed to house the New Castle Dry Goods Co.

Located next to Neshannock Creek, the land is prone to sinking, and building piles had to be driven 50 feet into the ground to keep the building stable. Other precautions were taken to make the building sturdy.

The New Castle Dry Goods Co. opened to the public May 14, 1913. It’s the first commercial building downtown with electricity.

The store was remodeled many times, but façade changes were made in 1940 and it reopened to the public that November. Now called The New Castle Store, the store’s pink marble was installed and all show windows were updated.

The store, now part of the regionally owned Troutman’s Department Store chain, is closed in the mid-1980s.
