WOMEN

Westminister 79, Chatham 74

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. — Guards Gina Brunetti (Canfield/Mooney High) and Kaitlin McCarthy (Lowellville) drained two free throws apiece in the final 13 seconds for the Titans in Presidents’ Athletic Conference action. The Titans (10-3, 3-2) trailed against the first-year, PAC member Cougars (4-7, 1-3 PAC) by one point with 57 seconds remaining and by as many as five points with 6:35 to go in the game. After Allason Holt gave the Cougars a 74-73 lead with under a minute remaining, Westminster senior guard/forward Emilee Ackerman answered with a lay-up to put the Titans back on top. Brunetti scored a career-high 25 points on 8-14 shooting, including 4-5 from 3-point range. Brunetti’s previous personal best was 16 points in Monday’s win over Point Park. Ackerman came off the bench to score 18 points, while grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds and handing out a team-high four assists. Senior forward Terese Marszalek bucketed 15 points and sophomore center Rachel Martinko sank 12 markers to go with nine boards and three blocks. Barb Petty led the Cougars with 12 points as one of four double-figure scorers.

Denison 77, Hiram 53

HIRAM — Denison had three players score in double figures led by Shana Kaiser with a game-high 14 points. Haley Dahlgard and Leslie Marshall were tied for second with 13 points and Sarah Perrine added 10 points. Hiram had one player score in double figures in sophomore guard Pamela Spencer with 10 points on three-of-eight shooting (37.5 percent). Denison took control of the game in the early minutes of the first half with a series of small scoring runs and had a commanding 13-point lead, 22-9, with 9:18 left to play in the North Coast Athletic Conference game. The Terriers are now 3-10 overall and 1-4 in the NCAC. The Big Red improved to 7-6 overall and 3-1 NCAC. In the second half, Denison outscored Hiram, 22-7, in the first 7:47 that included a 3:13 scoring drought by the Terriers, to increase its lead to 25 points, 56-31, with 12:13 to go. Hiram will look to end its current three-game losing streak Saturday at 2 p.m. when it hosts the College of Wooster.

Bethany 56, Grove City 47

GROVE CITY, Pa. — Four Grove City players scored in double figures. Senior forward Brittany Anderson posted an 11-point, 12-rebound double-double for the Wolverines while sophomore Krista Beechy recorded 10 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. Sophomore Laura Miller added 11 points and nine rebounds while senior guard Shannon Overdorff fired in 10 points. Grove City owned a 48-36 rebound edge. However, the Wolverines committed 27 turnovers which led to 19 Bethany points. Grove City led 22-21 at the half and led by as many as six, 29-23, in the second half. Bethany grabbed the lead for good, though, with a 12-1 run midway through the second half. Grove City closed to 45-42 with three minutes left on an Overdorff basket but Bethany (7-5, 3-1 PAC) sealed the win with an 11-2 run. Susannah Cartland led the Bison with 12 points while Lisa Mitchell added 11. Bethany shot 34 percent (21 of 61) from the field while Grove City made 33 percent (19 of 58) of its field-goal attempts. Grove City will visit Waynesburg Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m. in PAC action.

Slippery Rock 81, Bloomsburg 51

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. — The Rock ended a six-game losing skid in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference “crossover” action in Morrow Field House. The Green and White presented head coach Laurel Heilman with her 200th career victory. Heilman owns a 200-206 career mark in 16 seasons as a collegiate head coach (eight seasons at Allegheny College, eight seasons at SRU). The win, SRU’s first in six interdivisional games this winter, improved The Rock’s season record to 5-9. Bloomsburg fell to 4-9. Sophomore post player Haley Gaidosh scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds for The Rock, while sophomore win Julie Molloy scored 18 points, five rebounds and three assists. Molloy was 4-of-5 from beyond the arc. Senior post Nijha McNeely added 12 points and seven rebounds for SRU and junior guard Amanda Nero (Lowellville) recorded 11 points and eight assists. Bloomsburg was led by All-PSAC-Eastern Division performer Colleen Kegerreis’ 16 points.

MEN

Bethany 73, Grove City 53

GROVE CITY, Pa. — Bethany (7-7, 3-1 PAC) took the lead for good in the first half with a 14-2 run and held a 44-28 lead at halftime in the Grove City College Arena. The Bison shot 10 of 20 (50 percent) behind the three-point line in the first half. For the game, the Bison drained 17 three-point goals on 38 attempts. Grove City, meanwhile, shot just 3 of 12 (25 percent) behind the arc. Sophomore center Andy O’Keefe led Grove City with 12 points. Bethany senior guard Brody Jackson led all scorers with 28 points, including eight three-pointers. Jackson also had seven assists. Bethany forward Ryan Besancon added 22 points and 11 rebounds, helping the Bison own a 38-35 edge on the glass. Senior guard Shawn Carr (New Castle, Pa./Mohawk) grabbed a team-leading six rebounds for Grove City (9-5 overall). Grove City shot 22 of 56 (39 percent) from the floor while Bethany finished 27 of 64 (42 percent). The Wolverines had just 11 turnovers and committed only seven fouls. Senior guard Joe Capotosta and junior guard Joe McCoy each had seven points for the Wolverines, who are now in a three-way tie atop the PAC with Bethany and Thomas More (4-2 PAC). Grove City will visit Waynesburg Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in PAC action.

Bloomsburg 60, Slippery Rock 53

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. — The Rock suffered its seventh straight loss in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference “crossover” action in Morrow Field House. The Rock (2-11) will look to end its skid today when it hosts Mansfield in a 1 p.m. game in the Field House. Freshman post player Cory Somerville recorded team-high totals of 16 points and nine rebounds Saturday for SRU, while junior wing Erroll Robinson chipped in 11 points, junior wing Jamar Scales nine points and six rebounds and senior post Ken Ottrix seven points and six rebounds. Nick Jones scored a game-high 24 points for Bloomsburg (8-5).

Ohio Weseylan 91, Hiram 53

HIRAM — The Terriers drop to 4-9 overall and 1-3 in the NCAC while the Battling Bishops improve to 8-4 overall and 3-1 NCAC. Cold shooting in the first half by Hiram resulted in a large halftime deficit as the Terriers shot just 18.5 percent (five-of-27) in the period. Hiram never led in the game and a series of small scoring runs by the Bishops in the first stanza led to a sizeable 48-26 advantage heading into the locker rooms. In the second half, OWU continued to pull away and reached its largest lead of the game of 40 points, 91-51, with just under a minute remaining in the game en route to the 91-53 victory. For the game, OWU shot 49.3 percent (35-of-71) from the field and held Hiram to just 25.0 percent (14-of-56) shooting. Individually, the Bishops were led by Dustin Rudegeair with a game-high 23 points. He also grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. Three other OWU players scored in double figures with Kyle Holliday scoring 13 points, Andrew Martin tallied 11 points and Jesse Jean added 10 points. Hiram was led by sophomore point guard Mike Staley with 17 points on two-of-11 shooting (18.2 percent) and an outstanding 11-of-12 (91.7 percent) from the free-throw line. Senior All-NCAC forward Mike McDevitt (Lisbon/David Anderson) was the only other Terrier in double digits with 11 points. In addition, sophomore forward Jason Hebeisen grabbed a team-best 10 boards. Hiram concludes its three-game homestand on Wednesdayagainst No. 20 nationally-ranked College of Wooster in a NCAC contest at Price Gymnasium. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
