VFW Post 3538 meeting
STRUTHERS — The United Veterans Council of Greater Youngstown will meet at VFW Post 3538, 157 Lowellville Road, Struthers, at 7 p.m. Jan. 21. The installation banquet will be discussed.
College scholarships
The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans will offer $5,000 college scholarships to 416 new military veterans who have served honorably in Operation Iraqi Freedom or Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. Applications for 2008 scholarships are available Tuesday through April 15, and can be found at https://www.horatioalger.org/scholarships_military/.
Eligible applicants must demonstrate critical financial need, intention to pursue a bachelor’s degree at an accredited college or university in the United States; have no more than 60 cumulative semester/credit hours by the end of the 2007 term; have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0; have integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity, and U.S. citizenship or permanent residency.

Marine corporal
Marine Corps Cpl. Adam J. Foutz, son of Carol A. Foutz of Girard, was promoted to his current rank while serving with Headquarters Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, Okinawa, Japan. Foutz is a 2006 graduate of Girard High School.
HONORS
Iraq Campaign Medal
Air Force Master Sgt. F. Jay Steinbrink has been decorated with the Iraq Campaign Medal, which is awarded to members of the U.S. armed forces who serve or have served in direct support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq or contiguous waters or air space above Iraq on or after March 19, 2003.
Steinbrink, a superintendent with 24 years of military service, is assigned to the 52nd Medical Support Squadron, Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany.
The son of Patricia Steinbrink of New Castle, Pa., he graduated in 1976 from New Castle Senior High School, received a bachelor’s degree in 1979 from Youngstown State University, and earned an associate degree in 2007 from Community College of The Air Force, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala.

Army: National Guard Pfc. Ashley L. Petiya (Champion High School, ’07), daughter of Judy Petiya of Warren; Pvt. David A. DiMuccio (New Castle High School, New Castle, Pa., ’04), son of Lana Shevitz and grandson of Marlene McKinnis, both of New Castle; Pvt. Wade A. Loccisano (Lincoln High School, Ellwood City, Pa., ’06), son of David Loccisano of Ellwood City.
