YOUNGSTOWN — The Butler Institute of American Art’s Area Artists Annual Exhibition opens today and runs through Feb. 3. The juried show, in its 71st year, includes works in all media by artists residing within 40 miles of Youngstown. The juror for this year’s exhibition was Thomas McNickle, a well-known regional painter. The winners are: Amy Krieger of Youngstown, best of show; Chris Leeper of Canfield, first prize; Don Williams of Youngstown, second prize; Ann Miller of Warren, third prize; and William Perry of Harmony, Pa., Mahoning Valley Watercolor Society Award. Honorable mentions went to the following: William R. Danielson of Youngstown; Heesun Sung of Hubbard; Ellie Steins of West Middlesex, Pa.; Donald Nelson of Beaver, Pa.; Carol Begley of Beaver, Pa.; and Don Pedicini of Beaver, Pa.

‘Lion, Witch, Wardrobe’
YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown Playhouse Youth Theatre will present “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” at 2:30 p.m. Saturday and Jan. 20, 26 and 27 at 2:30 p.m. in the Playhouse’s Moyer Room. The 45-minute play, adapted from the C.S. Lewis novel, is about four children who together face many adventures in the land of Narnia. Running time of the show is 45 minutes. The two-person cast — Matthew Stevens and Lindsay Stevens — play all of the parts. Patricia M. Fagan is the director, James Lybarger is set designer and Patricia Petaccio is costumer. T. J. Montessori School plans
mystery dinner-theater
YOUNGSTOWN — Montessori School of the Mahoning Valley will hold a murder mystery dinner theater at 6 p.m. Feb. 9 at Byzantine Center at the Grove, 3801 Shady Run Road. The play will be “The Curse of the Hopeless Diamond,” a whodunit in which audience members help figure out clues. A silent auction will also be held. Tickets are $40. Call (330) 788-4622. to play Slippery Rock
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. — A limited number of tickets remain available for “Philadanco!,” the Philadelphia Dance Company’s Feb. 8 performance at Slippery Rock University. The contemporary dance troupe, which emphasizes innovative works by American choreographers, will perform at 7:30 p.m. in Miller Auditorium. BOARDMAN — Elizabeth Dory Ramsey, a graduate of Boardman High School and Denison University, is the cinematographer for two documentary films that were selected for the 2008 Sundance Film Festival: “An American Soldier” and “Traces of the Trade: A Story from the Deep North.” More than 950 films were submitted in the documentary film category with 16 chosen for viewing.

Art exhibit at Hiram
HIRAM — An exhibition of art by University of Akron professor Hui-Chu Ying will run from Jan. 22 to Feb. 29 in the Gelbke Fine Arts Center gallery at Hiram College. Titled “Prayers,” the exhibit is in a variety of media, including painting, drawing, etching, screen-printing, collage and large-scale installation.
