Western Reserve pulls off upset over Wellsville


BERLIN CENTER — After leading by 14 points in Friday’s fourth quarter, the Western Reserve High basketball team hung on to upset previously unbeaten Wellsville, 62-61.

The Blue Devils’ 48-34 lead with 5:51 remaining evaporated when Wellsville substitute Deshon Pullie came off the bench and scored 17 fourth-quarter points.

The Blue Devils made seven of 12 free throws in the fourth to keep their edge. Western Reserve (5-7, 3-5 Inter Tri-County League Tier Two) was ahead by four when the Tigers pulled within one as time expired.

Pullie finished with 19 points while Jeremy Carter had 18 for the Tigers (12-1, 7-1 ITCL Tier Two).

After sitting most of the third quarter, Zane Carter returned but got his fourth foul and ended with three points.

Junior Justin Lude scored 21 points and Nate Lude, a senior, had 19 points and 12 rebounds for the Blue Devils, who connected on 22 of 41 field goals.

Leetonia 50, Sebring 39

LEETONIA — The Bears (4-9, 2-6 ITCL Tier Two) built a 29-15 lead by halftime and the Trojans (9-4, 6-1) couldn’t recover.

“We’ve struggled with inconsistency throughout the season,” Leetonia coach Jay Airhart said. “I haven’t done a very good job at this point in realizing the kids potential, but tonight we had a total team effort and that was the big difference.”

Josh Selway paced the Bears balanced scoring attack with 11 points. He also had seven assists and six steals. Tom Orr pulled down 12 of 31 rebounds.

Allan Jurica led the Trojans with 12 points.

Southern 53, Lowellville 49

LOWELLVILLE — Guard Tyler Baker scored 24 points, most on slashing drives to the basket, for Southern (10-3, 5-3 ITCL Tier Two).

Andrew Diaz added 16 points for the winners. Baker also had 25 points against Lowellville in their first meeting, when the Indians won at home, 48-45.

Lowellville jump ahead in the first quarter, before Southern stormed back to lead by 14 points in the third period. The Rockets pulled within 50-48 and had possession before coming up short.

Anthony Schiraldi and Mauro Amendola had 10 points apiece while senior forward Zach Matisi had 10 of Lowellville’s 33 rebounds.

McDonald 77, Jackson-Milton 37

NORTH JACKSON — Adam Streb had 20 points, J.R. Harvey 14 and Mikey Thomas 13 to lead McDonald (10-2, 6-2 ITCL Tier Two).

McDonald, which won an earlier game against Jackson-Milton, made 30 goals to the Bluejays’ 12. McDonald also had a 36-21 rebounding advantage.

Jackson-Milton junior guard Ben Carlile scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

Springfield 58, Lisbon 48

LISBON — Todd Kibby scored 16 points and pulled down 19 rebounds to lead Springfield (9-3, 6-2 ITCL Tier One) past winless Lisbon.

Nate Schuler added 14 points and Brandon Goist had 13 points and six assists for the Tigers.

Lisbon (0-13, 0-8) was led by Arlan Bailey who had a game-high 27 points including five 3-point goals.

East Palestine 51,
Mineral Ridge 37

MINERAL RIDGE — Senior forward Nick DiCello scored a career-high 21 points to lead the Bulldogs (9-3, 5-3 ITCL Tier One). On defense, DiCello helped limit Rams forward T.J. Bevilacqua to eight points.

Wes Best netted 13 points while Matt Greene pulled down nine rebounds for the Bulldogs.

Justin Graham led the Rams (4-7, 3-5) with 11 points.

Crestview 64, South Range 51

NEW WATERFORD — The Raiders (3-10, 1-7 ITCL Tier One) held a 38-29 lead at intermission, but the Rebels (5-7, 3-5) outscored South Range 35-18 in the second half to prevail.

Brandon Gates sparked the Rebels with 20 points. Jimmy Smith added 12 and Mark Einsiedel had 10. Joe Mihlan led the Raiders with 19 points.

Columbiana 74, United 67

CLEVELAND — The Clippers (11-1, 7-0) won the game at Quicken Loans Arena to remain atop the Tier One standings.

The Eagles are 7-4, 6-2.
