Mooney wins 2 OT thriller


YOUNGSTOWN — It took the Mooney High basketball team two overtimes on Friday to post a 70-69 victory over East in the Cardinals’ gymnasium.

With eight seconds remaining in the second overtime, East held a 69-65 lead. Nick Flaviano of the Cardinals (5-5) connected on a three-point baskets to get within 69-68.

On the inbound pass, East (7-6) was fouled and missed two free throws. Flaviano was then fouled on a 3-point attempt as time expired.

Flaviano missed the first of three free throws, then tossed in to straight for the victory. He finished with 11 points.

Mike Gemma paced the Cardinals with 13 points and he grabbed 16 rebounds. Mooney’s Tim Marlowe and Ronnie Matino each scored 10 points. Marlowe had six assists and three steals.

Anthony Bowers sparked the Panthers with 20 points. Jamayle Roland chipped in with 14 and Kenny Carter added 13.

Chaney 70, Beaver Local 55

LISBON — Alan Burns’ 19 points led the Cowboys (3-8) who had four scorers in double figures.

Tyray Helms had 12 points, Mike Parker 11 and Isaiah Fason 10.

For the Beavers, Ethan Russell scored 14 points.

Perry 50, Fitch 23

PERRY TWP. — Kenny Frease finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds and six blocked shots to help Massillon Perry win this Federal League matchup.

Perry led, 24-9, at halftime, holding the Falcons to just eight field goals for the game.

Anthony Capuano added 11 points and six assists for the Panthers.

John Williams was the top scorer for the Falcons with six points.

Western Reserve Academy 59,
Warren Kennedy 37

WARREN —Milan Moncrief scored 20 points while Danny Wrigley and Nate Kasper had 14 apiece. Angel Rodriguez added 11 for Western Reserve Academy. The visitors hit on 25 of 55 goals and five of eight free throws.

Nick Brown’s 14 points paced JFK (5-6), which lost an 11-9 first-period lead when it scored only five second-quarter points.

JFK made 14 of 37 goals and 6 of 10 free throws.

West Branch 60, Minerva 54

MINERVA — West Branch built and early lead and then had to hold off Minerva in the final quarter.

The Warriors (8-4, 6-3 Northeastern Buckeye Conference) led 29-16 at halftime and 39-29 after three quarters.

Vic Pappas and Michael Sellaroli each had 12 points, while Trent Woods added 10.

Southington 68, Mathews 58

VIENNA — Trey Tietz’s 31 points included three 3-pointers for the Wildcats (11-1, 5-1 Northeastern Athletic Conference).

Brad Sherwod scored 10 for Southington.

For the Mustangs (4-6, 1-3), John Scudier scored 15 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Rick Sommers scored 13 points while Colin Bowser had 11.
