AUSTINTOWN — A district school bus driver was treated for minor injuries after bumping her head when a Mahoning County Mental Retardation and Disabilities bus struck the school bus. About 8 a.m. Friday, the school bus was just beginning its route with one elementary school pupil on board, Superintendent Doug Heuer said. The accident occurred on New Road just east of Turner Road. The bus driver was waiting to pull onto New Road when the MRDD bus, traveling on New Road, swiped the front of the school bus, Heuer said. The child on the school bus wasn’t injured and there were no children on the MRDD bus, he said.

Guard deployment

YOUNGSTOWN — About 50 soldiers from the Ohio Army National Guard’s 583rd Military Police Detachment are scheduled to mobilize for a year of active duty this month in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The public is invited to the unit’s 11 a.m. deployment ceremony Jan. 25 at Crossroads Church, 554 South Meridian Road. Although this is the first deployment for the 583rd, many of the unit’s soldiers have deployed previously in support of the war on terrorism. “My soldiers are extremely professional, have been training hard and will continue to prepare for this upcoming mission,” said Capt. Eric Luca, detachment commander.

Seminar on fundraising

YOUNGSTOWN — U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown’s office will have a seminar on obtaining federal funds from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday in the Ohio Room of Youngstown State University’s Kilcawley Center. The seminar is free to the public.

Meetings changed

BOARDMAN — Township trustees have changed their meetings to 6 p.m. the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month in the government center, Market Street. Robyn Gallitto was named chairwoman and Larry Moliterno was named vice chairman for 2008. Both selections were by a 3-0 vote. Kathy Miller is the third trustee.

School open to walkers

CORTLAND — Lakeview High School will resume Project Walk Warm from 3 to 5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays through March 20 to provide the community with a place where they can walk for exercise. Free coffee seminar

WARREN — A coffee seminar presented by a “coffee master” from a Warren Starbucks will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library, 444 Mahoning Avenue N.W. Weathersfield leaders

MINERAL RIDGE — Weathersfield Township Zoning Board of Appeals selected Tim McNeil as its new chairman and Cathy Zapka vice chairwoman. Stephanie Ramer is secretary. The board will continue to meet on the second Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. in the township administration building meeting room, except in May and October, when meetings will be the third Thursday of the month at 7 p.m.

River, stream workshop

CANFIELD — The Mahoning Soil & Water Conservation District in partnership with Mill Creek MetroParks, Mahoning Valley Landscape & Nursery Association and Ohio State University Extension will have its second annual Landscaper and Riparian Management Workshop 5 to 8 p.m. Jan. 31. The workshop will be at Mill Creek MetroParks Farm in McMahon Hall, 7574 Columbiana-Canfield Road. Learn search and rescue

U.S. Search and Rescue, Recovery will have an orientation meeting Jan. 27 at Raccoon State Park, Beaver County, Pa., for people interested in volunteering with the regional unit, which operates in Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. The Mahoning County Unit is expanding its membership this year. The group’s primary mission is in the search, rescue and recovery of people who suddenly go missing.
