Pelini leads Mooney; East wins SVC game


YOUNGSTOWN — Sarah Pelini connected for 14 points Thursday to lead the Mooney High girls basketball team to a 63-33 victory over Chaney in a Steel Valley Conference girls basketball game.

Katie Hughes scored 12 points and Dominque Zordich had 10.

Dayna Daltorio contributed nine points for Mooney (8-5, 1-0 SVC), which led 33-15 at halftime.

Chaney (3-6, 0-1) was led by Mimi North with 11 points.

East 51, Warren JFK 24

YOUNGSTOWN — East fell behind 11-7 at the end of the first quarter, but rebounded to go ahead 26-15 at intermission. The Panthers took a 38-21 lead into the fourth period.

Alexandra Hines paced East with a game-high 21 points. Reshayla Taylor added nine. Brianna Dawson pulled down 18 rebounds and Monet Oliver had 12. Stephanie Cervi led the Eagles with six points.

Hubbard 57, Girard 41

HUBBARD — Cara Julian had 18 points, six steals and four assists while Brittany Bullock had 10 points, four assists and four steals.

Kylee Sharisky and Abbie DeLuco had nine points each to lead Hubbard (8-5, 6-1 Trumbull Athletic Conference).

Michele Starkey grabbed 11 rebounds, had six steals and scored five points to aid the Eagles, who made 17-for-20 at the line to compensate for a narrow 17-16 edge in field goals.

Katelyn Brainyard had 12 points and Emily Smercansky nine to lead Girard (1-12, 1-6).

Newton Falls 40, Lakeview 38

CORTLAND — Jaci Dach made two free throws with 15 seconds remaining and the Tigers (7-5, 4-2) held on for the TAC victory.

The Tigers built a 21-14 halftime lead, but the Bulldogs (4-8, 2-4) outscored Newton Falls 10-7 in the third quarter and 14-12 in the final eight minutes of action only to come up short.

Dash sparked the Tigers with 15 points. Newton Falls had a 36-31 rebounding edge.

Joanna Novotny paced the Bulldogs with 14 points and she had four steals and two assists. Emily Malmisur pulled down 10 rebounds.

Lordstown 47, Bristol 18

LORDSTOWN — Kelsey Whitline scored 15 points and had five steals while Brianna Blodgett had 14 points with 10 rebounds to pace Lordstown in a Northeastern Athletic Conference game.

Carly Gibbs contributed eight rebounds, four points and three assists for the Red Devils (7-5, 3-3 NAC).

Katie Pajestka scored four points for Bristol (2-10, 0-6 NAC).

Mathews 50, Southington 42

VIENNA — Carly Roscoe scored 13 points to lead three Mustangs in double figures.

Allie Stein added 11 points and 11 rebounds while Lindsay Buckner had 11 points for Mathews (7-5, 4-2 NAC).

Alexis Wolf had 15 points for the Wildcats (2-6, 2-2).

Struthers 55, East Liverpool 35

EAST LIVERPOOL — Ashley Galbraith scored 18 points and Halle Minchin-Skook added 12 as Struthers won a Metro Athletic Conference game Wednesday.

Dana Matthews added nine points for the Wildcats (7-2, 2-2 MAC), who led 31-16 at halftime.

For East Liverpool (6-5, 2-3) Courtney Harrison scored 11 points.
