Mercer transit agency director resigns

HERMITAGE, Pa. — A search is under way to replace Bill Jones, longtime director of Mercer County Community Transit Agency, who has resigned.

Tom Tulip, executive director of Mercer County Council of Governments, said Wednesday that Jones has taken a job as director of the Harrisburg Municipal Transit Authority. His resignation is effective Feb. 1.

Jones has been director of the local transit agency for more than 20 years, having run a program first under auspices of the Mercer County Area Agency on Aging and later for COG.

The transit agency runs a demand-response program, which provides door-to-door pickup for elderly and other eligible riders for errands and medical appointments, as well as operating the Shenango Valley Shuttle Service, a fixed-route bus system serving Sharon, Sharpsville, Farrell, Hermitage and Wheatland.

Tulip said advertisements for Jones’ replacement have been placed in transit publications and local papers.

Applicants are being sought with a bachelor’s degree in a business or public administration related field and a minimum five years’ management supervisory experience in public transportation.

Résumés can be sent to the Mercer County Council of Governments, 2495 Highland Road, Hermitage, Pa., 16148. For questions, call COG at (724) 981-1561.
