NILES — Boxing champion Kelly Pavlik will sign autographs for free from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Eastwood Mall in front of the WFMJ-TV 21 studio. The event is sponsored by WFMJ, the Eastwood Mall and Home Savings and Loan Co. Donations will be accepted to benefit the Potential Development Program, which offers educational services to children with developmental delays, challenging behaviors and autism.

Dog carcasses found

YOUNGSTOWN — A mauled dog carcass discarded in a tarp was found on Decatur Street and another carcass was found in a sheet of plastic just west of Darwin Avenue early today, police said. The officer asked that his report be forwarded to a humane agent and deputy dog warden, believing dog fights have returned to the East Side.

Search for fugitive

NEW BRIGHTON, Pa. — Pennsylvania State Police in Beaver are looking for a man who escaped from a Penn Avenue halfway house. Richard Henley, who is described as a black man, 6 feet 6 inches tall, weighing 210 pounds with a shaved head and a goatee, was serving time at Penn Pavilion, a drug and rehabilitation center here, for a theft offense. He fled the facility late Monday night. Anyone with information concerning Henley’s location should call local police or state police, Beaver, at (724) 773-7400.

Charged with assault

YOUNGSTOWN — A 12-year-old pupil was arrested at Odyssey School on Commonwealth Avenue after a teaching assistant reported being attacked by the boy. The West Dewey Avenue boy, who had been disruptive in class, was escorted to a time-out room by the female teaching assistant Monday. Once in the room, the boy scratched, punched and kicked the woman, reports show. He was charged with assault on a teacher and taken to the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center.

Car damaged by bricks

YOUNGSTOWN — At least eight boys and one girl threw bricks at a Liberty woman’s 2005 Chrysler Sebring as she drove on Logan Avenue around 6:30 p.m. Monday, police said. Most of the bricks hit the car’s right side, leaving dents, scratches and paint damage, police said. The hood was also dented and the right headlight broken. The 53-year-old woman said the juveniles ran out from Dennick Avenue to throw the bricks and then fled back toward Dennick.

Warren murder case

WARREN — A Warren man accused of murder has been ordered held without bond. Jason Orr, 29, appeared Tuesday before municipal Judge Terry Ivanchak, who ordered him held without bond and scheduled a preliminary hearing for Monday.

Orr is accused of the Sunday morning shooting death of Tristan Aguilar, 24, of Saginaw, Mich., on a vacant lot at Colonial Street and Adelaide Avenue. Aguilar has relatives here. Police have said the two fought. Orr got into his car from which he fired, striking Aguilar in the chest. Aguilar died shortly after being dropped off at St. Joseph Health Center. Orr was captured Monday afternoon in a car outside the Trumbull County Jail.

Intruders flee home

YOUNGSTOWN — Two teenage boys wearing ski masks entered a Hermosa Avenue home through an unlocked door and demanded money from the 92-year-old resident around 4 p.m. Monday, police said. The homeowner was sitting in the kitchen with a woman friend when the boys, likely 16 or 17 years old, entered. When the victim told the intruders he had no money one of the boys grabbed the woman’s purse and cell phone. The suspects fled when the homeowner told them he was going to get his gun. As the boys ran out the door, the woman grabbed back her purse and phone.
