WARREN — Police have captured a 29-year-old Warren man who was sought for suspected involvement with the city’s first homicide of 2008.
City detectives and federal marshals took Jason Orr into custody about 3:30 p.m. Monday in a car that was in front of the Trumbull County Jail.
His mother and grandmother also were in the car.
City detectives obtained an arrest warrant Monday charging Orr with the Sunday morning shooting death of Tristan Aguilar, 24, of Saginaw, Mich.
Aguilar had been wanted on nine outstanding warrants in Michigan in a shooting aimed at a police officer and other offenses, said U.S. Marshal Dean Michael.
Michael said marshals planned to begin looking for Aguilar on Monday based on information that he was in the Warren area where he has associates.
Authorities said Orr’s family was trying to talk him into surrendering. It’s not clear whether he intended to do that when he was spotted by Warren detectives and marshals in the car outside the jail.
Detective Wayne Mackey, who is investigating the death with Detective Justin Soroka, said Aguilar, who has family in the area, was with another man in a vacant lot at Colonial Street and Adelaide Avenue in the southeast section of the city shortly before 7:15 a.m. Sunday.
He said Orr drove into the driveway of the lot, got out and had a conversation with Aguilar that turned into an argument and then a fight.
Authorities say Orr returned to his car and was backing out of the driveway when he fired, striking Aguilar in the chest.
Aguilar was dropped off at St. Joseph Health Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly after police arrived.
Aguilar was wanted in Saginaw for a probation violation, one count each of fleeing from a police officer, assault on a police officer, trafficking in drugs, possession of drugs and four counts of illegal possession of firearms.
Michael said a search of his Michigan residence turned up two weapons.
This is the city’s first homicide of the year. In 2007, the first homicide didn’t occur until March 1 with the beating of 2-year-old Fred Miller in the Fifth Street apartment where he lived.
