OF INTEREST

This latest survey underscores the rapid turnabout under way in both parties’ contests as longtime front-runners have swooned. In mid-December, Giuliani had an 11 percentage point lead over Huckabee and a 13 point edge over McCain, but that was before Huckabee’s Iowa caucus victory last week. On the Democratic side, Clinton had an 18 point advantage over Obama in mid-December — again, before Obama’s Iowa win.

The USA Today/Gallup Poll involved telephone interviews conducted from Friday through Sunday with 1,023 adults nationwide. That included 423 Republicans or Republican leaners and 499 Democrats or Democratic leaners. The margin of sampling error for both groups was plus or minus 5 percentage points.
