Kirk Road line breaks

Kirk Road line breaks

YOUNGSTOWN — A portion of Kirk Road, near Kirkmere Elementary School, washed away in an apparent waterline leak Monday morning, according to officials from the city water department. Officials are still investigating the cause. An Allied Waste truck was damaged in the collapse at 5:21 a.m. Kirk Road remained open to traffic throughout the day, but a 2-by-4-foot hole was sectioned off by barrels, according to Joe Dunlap, construction supervisor for the department. “We’ve been having a pretty good number of water breaks. It’s the time of year to get them,” Dunlap said.

Austintown fires

The fire department estimated damage at $25,000 for the house and belongings. The second fire at 4:42 p.m. Saturday destroyed a vacant house at 6476 Fairview Road, the department said. There were no injuries. The cause of that blaze, which did $30,000 in damage, is under investigation.
