Game notes: The Penguins extended their winning streak to three straight on Saturday with a 71-61 victory over Loyola, the Penguins second straight Horizon League victory. Senior John Barber has been outstanding in the last two wins scoring 24 points and 15 rebounds against UIC and then following that with 18 points and six rebounds against Loyola. The Penguins are now 4-2 at home this season and are off to their best start in the league under third year head coach Jerry Slocum. UW-Milwaukee has won four straight, including a 55-53 win over Detroit Saturday night. The Panthers had a big win against Wright State last Thursday 75-64. Milwaukee is averaging 71.1 points a game, while allowing 74.4 points and the Panthers are shooting 41.6 percent from the field.
Series: The Penguins have won just four times in the 21-game series with Milwaukee. Two of those wins came last season when the Penguins won 68-65 in Milwaukee and followed that with an 81-63 win at Beeghly Center. Milwaukee had won the four previous meetings and holds a 9-3 edge over the Penguins since they joined the Horizon League.
Next up: The Penguins will head out on the road for two games beginning with a Thursday contest at Wright State at 7 p.m. and then will play at Detroit on Saturday at 3:35. The Penguins’ next home game will be Jan. 17 when Valparaiso comes to Beeghly Center for a 7:35 contest.
