Portion of Kirk Road collapses, but remains open

YOUNGSTOWN — A portion of Kirk Road, near Kirkmire Elementary School, washed away in an apparent water line leak this morning, according to officials from the city water department. Officials are still investigating the cause.

An Allied Waste truck was damaged in the collapse at 5:21 a.m. Kirk Road remains open to traffic, but a 2-by-4-foot hole is sectioned off by barrels, according to Joe Dunlap, construction supervisor for the department.

“We’ve been having a pretty good number of water breaks — it’s the time of year to get them,” said Dunlap. “Usually when the road undermines like that, there’s a leak.”
