Jackson-Milton’s Joe Skaggs named MVP of tournament


He won his fourth straight meet title while Girard won the team crown.

NORTH JACKSON — Joe Skaggs of Jackson-Milton High was named MVP of the Leonard Truck & Trailer wrestling tournament after winning his weight class for the fourth straight year Saturday.

Skaggs, 18-0 this season, won the 145-pound championship with a 12-4 victory over Jake Cuto of Girard. The Indians won the team title with 1481⁄2 points, and the host Bluejays were second with 115.

Girard’s Tony Cardiero (125) and Nico Francis (135) won individual titles, while Skaggs’ teammates, Vinny Pizzuto (103), Santino Pizzuto (112) and Dan Clawson (285) also won crowns.

Other weight class winners were Sal Esposito (152) of Liberty, Beau Bowden (171) of South Range, Ryan Crabtree (189) of Wellsville and Will Beagle (215) of Salem.

Columbiana 90, Beaver Local 75

COLUMBIANA — Andrew Tirpak scored 21 points and Columbiana (9-1) pulled away in the fourth quarter to win a non-conference game.

Joe Blinsky added 17 points for the Clippers, who led 62-60 after three periods. Travis Denmeade finished with 14 points and Kevin Blinsky scored 13.

Beaver Local (1-9), which led 40-38 at halftime, was paced by Ethan Russell, who poured in 36 points. Shawn Mercer added 11 points and eight rebounds.

West Branch 52, Carrollton 46

CARROLLTON — Amanda Stiffler scored 16 points to lead West Branch in a Northeastern Buckeye Conference girls basketball game.

Emilee Zets added 13 points and Michelle Sosnick nine rebounds for West Branch (6-6, 6-2 NBC).

Katy Fox had 22 points and 13 rebounds to lead Carrollton (4-8, 2-6).

Warren JFK 45

SHARON — Caitlin Lenhart had 22 points and Ashley Kirkpatric added 18 for Kennedy Catholic.

Paige Kleric had a game-high 27 points to lead Warren JFK (2-11), and was 13-of-16 at the foul line. Warren JFK trailed 30-20 at halftime.
