Shenango’s McNees heats up, helps Akron drop Miami (Ohio)

AKRON — Steve McNees scored 20 points and was 6-for-6 from 3-point range as Akron coasted to a 69-54 win Saturday night over Miami (Ohio).
McNees, from Shenango High, made three consecutive 3-pointers toward the end of the first half to kick off an 18-0 run for the Zips (11-3, 1-0 Mid-American Conference).
Eric Pollitz led the RedHawks with 12 points, while Tyler Dierkers and Michael Bramos each added nine.
Wood scored 19 and Nick Dials added 10 points for Akron.
Bowling Green 52, Ohio 49
BOWLING GREEN — Nate Miller scored 13 points and three other Falcons scored in double figures as Bowling Green grabbed a second half lead and held on.
Chris Knight scored 11 points and Darryl Clements and Brian Moten each had 10 for Bowling Green.
Leon Williams led Ohio with 14 points, while Bubba Walther finished with 13.
St. John’s 70, Cincinnati 58
NEW YORK — Anthony Mason Jr. scored 12 of his 17 points in the second half to lift St. John’s over Big East rival Cincinnati.
D.J. Kennedy and Justin Burrell each followed with 13 points for the Red Storm (7-6, 1-1), who led 33-22 at halftime. St. John’s had lost three of four.
Deonta Vaughn, who made nine of 16 shots, had 24 points for the Bearcats (6-8, 1-1). Cincinnati had won two straight after five consecutive losses.
A three-point play by John Williamson, who had 12 points, and a 3-pointer by Vaughn powered Cincinnati’s 11-6 run that brought the Bearcats within 39-33 at 16:46 of the second half.
The Red Storm answered with a run that finished with Larry Wright’s layup at 11:28 that made it 48-34.
