A MLK Planning Committee has planned a weekend of music, worship and learning:
MAHONING COUNTY
Bringing the Dream Home: Taking Action, 5:30 p.m. Jan. 18 at Congregation Rodef Sholom, 1119 Elm St., Youngstown.
The synagogue and North Side Interfaith Partnership will hold its annual potluck dinner and service to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with worship, fellowship, sustenance and action. The program will focus on involvement in community groups. Organizations working to make a difference on the North Side will participate and include ACTION (Alliance for Congregational Transformation Influencing Our Neighborhoods), Beatitude House, City of Youngstown 2010, Defend Youngstown, Lien Forward Ohio, Richard Brown Food Bank and Treez Please.
Kirk Noden, community organizer with ACTION and the Raymond J. Wean Foundation, will speak briefly on the how’s and why’s of community organizing. Participants should arrive by 5:30 p.m. and an interfaith service will be at 6. A potluck supper will follow. Those attending are asked to bring a dish with enough for 12 people — main dish, salad, vegetable or dessert but no pork or shellfish. Beverages and paper products will be provided.
Participants should register with the temple or their church office by Jan. 11.
A Musical Tribute to Martin Luther King: A Spiritual Journey, 7 p.m. Jan. 19 at Powers Auditorium, 260 Federal Plaza West, Youngstown.
Tickets: $5 for students, seniors and adult balcony; $12 for adult lower level; and $25 for gold circle seats.
Community Service of Worship, 3:30 p.m. Jan. 20 at New Bethel Baptist Church, 1507 Hillman St., Youngstown.
The featured presentation is by the Most Rev. George Murry, the bishop of the Diocese of Youngstown.
Together We are the Difference, a MLK Community Breakfast, 7:30 a.m. Jan. 21 at Kent State University Trumbull Campus, Technology Building, Room 117, Champion.

Social Injustice: Empowerment of Local Youth, a community workshop, 9:30 a.m.-noon Jan. 21 at First Presbyterian Church, 201 Wick Ave., Youngstown.
The keynote speaker for this event is the Rev. Orlando Chaffee, superintendent for the United Methodist District of Mahoning Valley.
The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Diversity Breakfast 8 a.m. Jan. 24 at Youngstown State University, Kilcawley Center, Chestnut Room.
Tickets: $10 for YSU students and $15 for all others. Sponsored by the YSU Office of Student Diversity, this breakfast will feature former state Sen. C.J. Prentiss, the governor’s representative for Closing the Achievement Gap, a program that aims to make sure each Ohio child has an equal chance to achieve his or her potential to succeed. The Trumbull County Chapter of A. Philip Randolp Institute is planning this King event:
Howland: Annual Salute to King luncheon at Leo’s Ristorante, 7042 E. Market St. at 3 p.m. Jan. 19. Cost is $30 for adults; $20 for children. This year’s theme is “The Importance of Health Care: Ensuring Our Future.” The keynote speaker is Dr. Rodney E. Hill, who specializes in obstetrics, gynecology and infertility. The community service award will be given to Jack Thornton, coach of the Warren Striders. Honorary chairwoman of the event is Jaladah Aslam, staff representative, Ohio Council of American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.
