VIENNA — A Browning-Ferris Industries truck struck the underside of the Route 11 bridge, while traveling westbound on state Route 82 early Saturday, causing superficial damage to the structure. According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the driver was cited for causing the accident, at 4:35 a.m. He drove away uninjured. All lanes remained open during the incident. An inspection by the Ohio Department of Transportation found the bridge remained functional. In December, a driver of a container-hauling truck struck the Niles-Vienna Road overpass over Route 11, killing the driver and causing thousands of dollars in damage to the bridge.

Man sought in shooting

YOUNGSTOWN — Police are searching for a man accused of shooting his live-in girlfriend early Saturday. Police responded to Howard Avenue at 5:25 a.m. on reports of gun shots to find Elmira J. Mendenhall, 29, lying on the bedroom floor face down, shot in the foot and the hip. She identified the 33-year-old father of her two children as the shooter. Mendenhall was transported to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where she was listed in stable condition Saturday night. Police said the shooter is alleged to have fled the scene in a green Ford Taurus.

Police seek fugitive

NEW BRIGHTON, Pa. — Pennsylvania State Police continue their search for a man who escaped from the Penn Pavilion on Friday. The pavilion is a drug and rehabilitation center on Penn Avenue here. Ronald L. Sheetz, 33, was serving time on theft charges. He was released for work at 4:45 a.m. but did not report to work or return to the facility, according to reports. State police said Sheetz is white, 5 feet 6 inches tall, and weighs 178 pounds. He has brown hair and brown eyes. Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to call the state police at (724) 773-7400.

Trustees promote clerk

NORTH LIMA — Beaver Township trustees have promoted assistant office clerk Tracey Parks to full-time status. Parks’ new position calls for a wage of $9.50 an hour, plus benefits. Officials hired the township woman part time in October at $8.50 an hour, with no benefits, after creating the new position in the clerk’s office. They said the job was established, and now expanded, to provide additional help in the administration office because of continued growth in the township and increased demands on staff. Parks’ new status went into effect Jan. 1. Trustees made the change during a recent reorganization meeting.

Vehicle hits utility pole

GREENVILLE, Pa. — A vehicle ran into a utility pole on state Route 18, north of High Road, disrupting power to parts of the borough and as far north as Crawford County, according to Hempfield Fire Department officials. The accident occurred at 5:58 p.m. Saturday. The driver was transported to University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Horizon Outpatient Center, Greenville, with minor injuries. Power was restored within three hours, fire officials said.
