Poland routs Struthers for eighth straight win


The Bulldogs scored 32 points in the first quarter on the way to a 99-43 win.

POLAND — The Poland High boys basketball team jumped out to a 32-13 first quarter lead and never was threatened as it remained undefeated with a 99-43 rout over Struthers in the Metro Athletic Conference boys contest Friday night.

Ben Umbel led the Bulldogs (8-0, 3-0 MAC) with 18 points. Poland had 14 different players score in the contest. Ben Donlow added 14 and Niko Fatimus had 12.

Struthers (4-5, 0-3) was led by R.J. Ragan with 11 points.

Howland 50, East Liverpool 39

EAST LIVERPOOL — Jared Kirin scored 16 points and Drew Guido added 14 to lead Howland (7-2, 2-1 MAC). The Tigers outscored East Liverpool (4-5, 1-2) 19-11 in the fourth quarter.

Jason Dickey and Nathan Howard each scored 10 points for the Potters.

United 62, Salem 60

HANOVERTON — United had to hold off a late rally by Salem to post its sixth victory.

The Rebels led 48-38 after three quarters, but the Quakers almost pulled it out by outscoring United 22-14 in the final eight minutes.

Jimmy Phillis led United (6-3) with 16 points, while Jeremy Walker added 13 points and 11 rebounds. Jordan Strabala scored 15 for the Quakers (6-3).

Akron Garfield 71, Chaney 64

AKRON — Chaney’s Alan Burns scored 24 points but it wasn’t enough as Garfield rallied for the non-league win.

Tyray Helms added 18 points and 11 rebounds, Mike Parker had seven points and nine rebounds and James Burns had 13 points to lead Chaney (2-7), which was outscored 24-15 in the fourth quarter.

Mailon Baby scored 17 points to lead five players in double figures for the Golden Rams (7-2).

Benedictine 67, Mooney 45

YOUNGSTOWN — Cameron Wright tossed in 29 points and Benedictine rolled away from Cardinal Mooney.

The Cardinals (3-5) were outscored 17-8 in the second period.

L.J. Sutton paced Mooney with 12 points, 11 rebounds and three steals.

Harding 83, Massillon 45

MASSILLON — Warren Harding put five players in double figures as the Raiders rolled to its ninth straight victory.

Chris Henderson scored 15 points, while Sheldon Brodgon added 14, Desmar Jackson 13 and Isiah Henderson 10 for the Raiders (9-0).

Massillon was led by Justin Turner with a game-high 20 points.

St. Thomas Aquinas 44

LOUISVILLE — Brian Guarnieri scored 26 points and Nick Brown added a triple-double with 10 points, 11 assists and 13 rebounds to lead Warren JFK (4-5), which outscored Aquinas 30-23 in the first half, including a 15-2 run in the second quarter.

Nick Fernandez scored 12 points for Aquinas.
