Man charged in homicide

SHARON, Pa. — A Spearman Avenue man was arrested on homicide charges after a shooting at his home. Sharon Police said Mozelle Goudy, 59, was arraigned early Thursday and is being held in the Mercer County Jail without bail. Police said they were called to Goudy’s home at 12:21 a.m. Thursday for a gunshot victim. A 39-year-old woman was lying in a bedroom with a gunshot wound. She was taken to Sharon Regional Health System’s hospital and then flown to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where she died at 2:37 a.m. Thursday. The Mahoning County coroner’s office identified her as Christine Hawkins of Sharon. Details of the shooting were not available late Friday from police.

Bridge to close for repairs

YOUNGSTOWN — The Spring Common Bridge linking Mahoning Avenue with Fifth Avenue and West Federal Street in the city’s downtown will close for repairs Monday and remain closed for at least six months. Traffic will be detoured over Hogue and Marshall streets and over the Marshall Street Bridge to Vindicator Square and West Federal Street.

Items stolen from car

GIRARD — City police are looking for a man who took items from the car of a Louis Circle man, then fired a gunshot at the man and his friend as they chased him off. Police reports say the 23-year-old Louis Circle man was visiting a friend on Illinois Street at 11:45 p.m. Wednesday when the man and his friend noticed someone rummaging through the car. The men chased the thief, eventually grabbing hold of his coat. The thief let the coat fall and continued running. The men told police that the man eventually turned and fired a shot at them. Reports said jewelry, $100 and several CDs were missing from the car.

Teen boys arrested

YOUNGSTOWN — Two teenage boys were arrested and a gun confiscated after police were sent to the 300 block of East Avondale Avenue to check out a report of shots fired around 3:30 p.m. Thursday. A 15-year-old East Chalmers Avenue boy was charged with carrying a concealed weapon, discharging a firearm in city limits and obstruction of official business. He was caught on East Philadelphia Avenue and told police that both he and his 14-year-old companion had fired the .32-caliber handgun officers found on Rush Boulevard. The boy said he got the gun from someone on the streets. He was taken to the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center. The second boy, of East Florida Avenue, was charged with discharging a firearm in city limits and obstructing official business and released to his mother.

Free immunizations

GIRARD — The Girard Health Department is offering free immunizations, as needed, to city children at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Parents must preregister children, bring a copy of the child’s immunization record, and accompany any children under age 18. Dr. James J. Enyeart, medical director, will administer the exams. Skating rink events

WARREN — Two events have been scheduled for the outdoor skating rink at Courthouse Square in downtown Warren. Danny G., an Elvis impersonator, will perform from 2 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday in honor of Elvis Day. Elvis Presley, called the King of Rock ’n’ Roll, was born Jan. 8 in Tupelo, Miss., and moved to Memphis, Tenn., in 1948. Jan. 12 is Century 21 Day at the rink. There will be free photos of the skaters, and food and karaoke in the gazebo from noon to 4 p.m.

Smoke alarm; gas leak

YOUNGSTOWN — Firefighters who heard smoke alarms going off removed a front window screen at an apartment on Dogwood Lane on the East Side and yelled for the teenage boy asleep on the couch to wake up and open the door. The 13-year-old boy complied, and firefighters found a pot burning on the stove at 5:20 p.m. Thursday. The boy said his mother told him about something cooking on the stove before she went out, but he forgot and fell asleep. No damage was reported. Earlier Thursday, firefighters responded to a report of a gas leak at 3031 Glenwood Ave. on the South Side and discovered that someone had tried to remove the hot water tank, which ruptured the gas line around 1 p.m. The gas was shut off and the housing department was notified to board up the vacant structure, reports show.
