SILVER SPRING, Md. — The American Hiking Society is offering college students an alternative to spending their spring break time and money searching for the perfect tan.

Adventure-minded students can hit the hiking trail and spend their time helping to build and maintain trails in America’s national parks and forests. No previous trail work or seasoned hiking experience is required, only a desire to get outside, volunteer and perhaps earn college credit in the process.

The American Hiking Society, founded in 1976, is the only national, recreation-based nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and protecting America’s hiking trails, their surrounding natural areas and the hiking experience.

Beginning in March, the society is offering weeklong Volunteer Vacations geared toward college students, allowing groups the unique opportunity to work on hiking trails.

Students can explore Big Cypress National Preserve in Florida, help expand a new 10-mile segment of the Arizona Trail in Coronado National Forest or hike the California coast while maintaining trails in Golden Gate National Recreation Area, among other opportunities.

These cost-effective outings range in physical exertion levels from moderate to challenging and are an exciting way to enjoy a break from the books. Several trips are offered throughout March, and others can be designed to accommodate different schedules.

“It’s an excellent way for college-age students to get outdoor experience in some of our nation’s most beautiful areas,” said Jeffrey Hunter, director of the American Hiking Society’s Southeast Trail Programs.

The cost is $245 for American Hiking Society members and $275 for nonmembers.

Students who sign up before Feb. 29 will receive a 10 percent discounted registration fee. College credit agreements must be made through students’ institutions prior to the trip. Visit the online schedule of trips at http://www.americanhiking.org/events/vv/index.html for more details.
