HERMITAGE, Pa. — Animal Appeal, a pet rescue and adoption organization, will have a display of dogs seeking responsible adoptive homes from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Hermitage Agway, 4065 E. State St. All dogs are immunized and spayed and neutered. An adoption fee is charged for each dog. Animal Appeal uses an application process for all adoptions.

Funds for food pantry

NEWTON FALLS — The Newton Falls Community Pantry is eligible to receive funds from the Feinstein Foundation, which provides money to hunger-fighting agencies. The more donations the pantry receives from March 1 through April 30, the more money the foundation will provide. Local donations to the community pantry can take the form of money, food items and pledges. The minimum the pantry can receive from the foundation is $250. For more information, call (330) 872-5574.

Fire is ruled arson

NEW CASTLE, Pa.— A fire at a vacant house has been ruled an arson. New Castle Fire Chief Tom Bulisco said 501 Walnut St. had no utilities and was filled with garbage, mattresses and desks. There was heavy fire and smoke in the second floor and attic when they arrived at 11:18 p.m. Wednesday, Bulisco said. The fire chief said the house had been owned by David Robinson and was up for county tax sale.

Reorganization meeting

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — Lawrence County commissioners will reorganize at 9 a.m. Monday and expect to elect a new chairman. Steve Craig, who will return for his second term, is expected to be elected chairman after receiving the most votes in the November election. He will take over for Dan Vogler, who is also returning for a second term and has been chairman since 2004. Rick DeBlasio, elected to his first term, will join the board Monday. The three said Thursday that they will reappoint James Gagliano chief clerk and Tom Leslie as county solicitor. Commissioners said they intend to keep the same meeting schedule with regular meetings at 10 a.m. Tuesdays and caucus meetings at 10 a.m. Thursdays in the county government center.

Stop-smoking class

ALLIANCE — Alliance Community Hospital is offering “Fresh Start,” a free, four-week smoking cessation program beginning Saturday. The class, open to the public, will be on four consecutive Saturdays from 10 to 11 a.m. in Conference Room 2-B on the hospital’s second floor. Everyone who registers will receive free nicotine patches, to aid them in their efforts. The free classes and patches are made possible through a grant from the American Cancer Society. Zoning appointments

NORTH JACKSON — At a special meeting Thursday, township officials interviewed candidates to fill spots on the zoning board and zoning board of appeals, each with five current members. Those appointed to the voluntary positions and their occupations: zoning board, Don Foster, retired from Delphi Packard; Tom Frost, U.S. Postal Service employee, and Jessica Hively, residential designer, alternates; zoning board of appeals, Tina Zitello, employee with Family Christian Store in Boardman, and Carol Hitchcock, self-employed business owner, alternates.
