Looking for something to do in the next week? Here’s a few high school events we’d suggest:
WRESTLING AT JACKSON-MILTON
The Leonard Truck & Trailer Invitational begins Saturday at 11 a.m. with 10 teams taking part, including Salem, Liberty and Warren JFK. The finals are scheduled to get under way about 5:30 p.m.
URSULINE-BOARDMAN
GIRLS HOOPS
This is one of those games that gets the Internet message boards all fired up. The game matches two of the Valley’s top programs and coaches; Friday night it’s at Boardman. The Irish come into the game with a 5-4 record while the Spartans are 7-4.
MORE GIRLS BASKETBALL
Canfield has already knocked two teams from the ranks of the unbeatens in the last three weeks — Struthers and Howland. Saturday night, the Cardinals play host to Salem, who is 4-3 overall but 2-1 in the conference. If Canfield wins this test, Coach Pat Pavlansky may not have another one until West Holmes on Jan. 21.
Meanwhile, United represents the last chance for anyone in the Inter Tri-County League to challenge South Range. The Raiders have buzzed through five league opponents already and their only loss overall has been to a rapidly-improving Warren Harding team. The Golden Eagles are 7-2, 5-1, with a two-point loss to Columbiana the only blemish on their ITCL resume.
MAC BOYS
Poland survived its last game by two points over Boardman. The Spartans weren’t intimidated by the Bulldogs’ full-court press; in fact, they attacked it pretty well. Tuesday night, Poland plays host to Howland in a key conference game. The Tigers are 6-2 overall and 1-1 in the MAC. Coach Don Andres’ squad is allowing less than 49 points per game. Poland, meanwhile, is averaging almost 87 per contest. Which style dominates will determine the winner of this one.
SWIMMING
There’s a couple cool events this weekend that will test local teams. Today, Poland goes against a solid Louisville team at Youngstown State, and Howland and Warren JFK are part of a triangular. Then Friday and Saturday, Boardman, Canfield and Warren Harding are in Canton for the Northeast Aquatics Conference meet at C.T. Branin Natatorium.
