YOUNGSTOWN — Marquies Johnson, 20, of Idylwild Street, Warren, told police he was shot in the leg while walking on Elm Street near New York Avenue on New Year’s Eve. Johnson was taken to Forum Health Northside Medical Center for treatment, but the hospital wouldn’t release any information on him. Johnson said he was walking down the street about 11 p.m. Monday when he heard five gunshots. One bullet hit him just above the ankle. He was driven to the hospital by a relative.
Walker shot in leg
YOUNGSTOWN — Robert Thurston Jr., 26, was shot in the leg as he walked along Salt Springs Road near Division Street. He was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center. Thurston told police he was walking about 5 p.m. Tuesday when he heard five or six gunshots and then noticed he was shot. A relative took him to the hospital. Police reports didn’t list an address for Thurston.
Teen starts fire
BOARDMAN — A home at 5133 South Ave. sustained $35,000 damage after a fire was started about 10:30 p.m. Monday by a 13-year-old playing with a lighter, firefighters said. The teenager set some papers on fire and then the blaze spread to a mattress. The fire was contained to the second floor.
Christmas tree pickup
HOWLAND — The township will collect Christmas trees from today through Jan. 18. Remove the ornaments and trimmings and place them curbside. The trees can also be dropped off from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, starting Wednesday through Jan. 19, at the public works department, 3600 North River Road. Copies can be picked up from the Tourism Office at 321 Mahoning Ave. They can also be requested by e-mail at Info@ExploreTrumbullCounty.com, or by calling (330) 675-3081. This annual brochure will be mailed out with each Visitors Guide in response to visitor information requests. It will be distributed at state-operated Travel Information Centers and taken to travel industry shows. 2 men charged
GREENVILLE, Pa. — Two Mercer County men are accused of beating up and holding another man against his will for money. Pennsylvania State Police said Douglas Banic Jr., 22, of Jamestown, is still wanted and Keith Sensesak, 25, of Greenville, turned himself in to police Dec. 28. Sensesak was arraigned and released after posting $10,000 bond. Police said a 20-year-old Greenville man told them he was held and beaten at 1:30 p.m. Dec. 27 at a home along River Road in Delaware Township. Banic and Sensesak are charged with robbery, unlawful restraint and simple assault.

YOUNGSTOWN — A 79-year-old man in an electric wheelchair was stopped and identified by police after a theft at the Adult Toy and Gift store on Market Street on Sunday afternoon. The East Wood Street man had no stolen items on him. The store manager told police he retrieved two items worth $33 as the disabled man was leaving the store. The items had been concealed under the suspect’s coat, reports show. A report of what happened was turned over to detectives.
