Fitch High’s Tony Jameson might not have had a perfect season in 2007, but on the final
Fitch High’s Tony Jameson might not have had a perfect season in 2007, but on the final Saturday he ended it perfectly.
Jameson finished a 44-1 season with his usual spot atop the state tournament awards podium, winning his third straight Division I state title by defeating Brunswick’s Richie Spicel 8-4 in the 135-pound final.
Jameson also won state championships at 103 pounds as a freshman and 119 pounds as a sophomore. He’s one of just 45 wrestlers in state history to win three titles.
His only loss came in the district semifinals to a freshman, David Habat of Cleveland St. Ignatius. That defeat snapped a streak of 84 straight victories, dating to the district tournament in 2005.
“Habat is a great kid and he wrestled a tough match,” said Jameson at the time. “I just wasn’t even into the match — my heart or my head.”
Jameson vowed he would do better at the state tournament, and he did, winning three matches by either pin or major decision, then the title match over Spicel.
Among the wins was a 13-1 rout of Habat in the semifinals.
In October, Jameson made a verbal commitment to attend Ohio State, where he will continue his career.
“There’s no one else like Tony — he sells out gyms with his style of wrestling,” Fitch coach Brett Powell said. “He is a high scoring, pin gambling style of wrestler.
“He tries for the pin and big points throughout the match. He’s unorthodox in that he can wrestle with a conventional or funky style. And he can switch during a match.”
And in February he’ll begin his quest to become just the 15th wrestler in Ohio history to win four state championships.
