Sheriff

Two candidates are running in the Democratic primary for sheriff. An (*) denotes incumbent. There is no Republican opposition.

THOMAS ALTIERE*

Age: 57.

Home: 9590 Cain Drive, Howland.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in law enforcement administration, a master’s degree in police management.

Employment: Trumbull County sheriff

Family: Wife, Darlene; three sons and a daughter.

Priority: Implementing a GPS ankle bracelet program to detect the exact location of an offender at all times to reduce jail overcrowding. It also detects alcohol and drug use.

JOSEPH P. CONSIGLIO

Age: 64.

Home: 2126 Oakwood St., Weathersfield.

Employment: Weathersfield Township police chief.

Education: Attended Youngstown State University.

Family: Wife, Nancy; six children; three grandchildren.

Priority: Restore dignity, integrity and accountability to the office of sheriff by eliminating wasteful spending, increasing deputy patrols, properly running and maintaining the jail and raising hiring standards.

COLUMBIANA COUNTY

Sheriff

Three candidates are running for the Republican nomination. The winner will face Democrat John M. Soldano, the Leetonia police chief, in November.

DANIEL MacLEAN III

Age: 52.

Home: 1334 Hillcrest Road, Wellsville.

Education: 1974 graduate of Wellsville High School; took criminal justice studies at Kent State University; Ohio Peace Officer training in 1977, numerous peace officer seminars.

Employment: Chief of Security, Columbiana County Municipal Court.

Family: One daughter.

Priority: To bringing a high level of integrity and professionalism to the office, working to get the most out of what we have and working to increase our visibility in the community; taking a firm stance with sex offenders and reaching out to our youths.

JERRY HERBERT

Age: 61.

Home: 2074 Macklin Road, New Waterford.

Education: Graduate of East Palestine High School; attended Ohio University.

Employment: Security officer, Columbiana County Municipal Court.

Family: One daughter.

Priority: A smooth transition within the department and to look deeply into the drug problem in the county. To see if there are any grants or funds available to assist our drug task force. When the drug problem is handled, then a lot of the other violent crime numbers will drop.

RAYMOND STONE

Age: 61.

Home: 36380 Salem-Grange Road, Salem.

Education: 1975 Salem Senior High School graduate; 1980 graduate of the Ohio Peace Officers Training Academy.

Employment: Perry Township police chief.

Family: Wife, Caroline; four children.

Priority: To work with the commissioners for more funding for the sheriff’s department.
