YOUNGSTOWN — A man died after being found in an icy stream near Lanterman’s Falls in Mill Creek Park early Thursday, a coroner’s investigator said. Brian J. Zarconi, 25, of Austintown was pulled from the water by park police around 1 a.m., police said. Firefighters started CPR but got no response. An ambulance crew took over and transported him to St. Elizabeth Health Center. Rick Jamrozik, a coroner’s investigator, said Zarconi was pronounced dead at the hospital. Jamrozik said an autopsy will be done but a preliminary review shows Zarconi likely jumped from the Canfield Road bridge that spans the water.

Nine residents become
naturalized U.S. citizens

YOUNGSTOWN — Judge Timothy E. Franken of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court naturalized nine citizens Thursday. They, their countries of origin, with their current hometowns in parentheses, are: Abdul Rehman, Pakistan (Boardman); Shilpa Patel, India (Canfield); Bernard Roumanos Abi-Salloum, Lebanon (Boardman); Christopher Douglas Button, Canada (Boardman); Ranjini Viswanathan, India (Canfield); Juana Martinez, Mexico (Campbell); Kewen Julian, People’s Republic of China (North Jackson); Vu Anh Dang, Vietnam (Boardman); and Thinh Chi Le, Vietnam (Boardman).

Cheerleaders invited
to visit YSU Saturday

YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown State University cheerleading squad invites juniors and seniors in high school, area cheerleading teams and other individuals who are interested in learning more about the Penguin spirit squads to a Cheerleading Visit Day on Saturday. Activities begin at 3:30 p.m. at Sweeney Hall with presentations on admissions and financial aid, campus tours, a cheerleading round-table discussion and meetings with the YSU spirit squad coaches before attending the Penguins men’s basketball game against Cleveland State. Get Out the Vote event

YOUNGSTOWN — A Get Out the Vote effort will take place Saturday from Union Baptist Church, 528 Lincoln Ave., where volunteers spend the day using 40 phone lines set up in the church hall. They will be calling membership lists and unlikely voters from their congregations and inner-city neighborhoods. The event is being spearheaded by the Ohio Baptist Convention, one of the largest black American organizations in the state composed of 84 congregations in 11 cities, and the Ohio Organizing Collaborative.

Mill Creek Park roads
to close Sunday for race

YOUNGSTOWN — These drives in Mill Creek Park will be closed from about 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday for the Youngstown Roadrunners Distance Classic Half Marathon. An anticipated 600 runners will be participating. The drives closed are Wick Drive, New Bears Den Drive, Cross Drive, Bears Den Drive, West Park Drive, West Cohasset Drive, Valley Drive, High Drive, Chestnut Hill Drive, East Park Drive, East Cohasset Drive, Robinson Hill Drive and half of Slippery Rock Bridge (access will remain open to East and West Glacier Drives and Memorial Hill Drive). Price Road, Old Furnace Road and Canfield Road also will remain open to traffic, but with delays possible.

Haz-Mat training grant

YOUNGSTOWN — A $5,589 hazardous materials training grant has been awarded to the Youngstown Fire Department from the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio. The grant will be used for Haz-Mat training of 137 fire service personnel, according to a PUCO news release.

Grave-decoration notice

NILES —The caretaker at St. Stephen Cemetery asks that all Christmas decorations be removed from graves before March 15. Any that remain after that date will be discarded. Easter and spring decorations will not be removed.
