Police seize cash, drugs

WARREN — Police seized almost $1,500 cash during a drug raid Tuesday morning at 1566 Belvedere Ave. S.E. No arrests were made. Lt. Thomas Skoczylas, commander of the police department’s narcotics unit, said that besides the cash, agents seized crack cocaine, marijuana and several different prescriptions drugs after the two-month investigation. There also was evidence that suspected crack was being manufactured at the residence, Skoczylas said. In the house at the time was a man, his sister and her three children.

Youngstown house fires

YOUNGSTOWN — A fire department lieutenant was treated at a hospital for a forehead wound he received at the scene of a vacant house fire at 50 Ellenwood Ave. Monday afternoon. The firefighter struck his head on a hose coupling, reports show. The first floor of the house was fully engulfed when crews arrived around 5 p.m. and, for safety reasons, the South Side structure was allowed to burn down. Damage was set at $5,000, a total loss. The cause is under investigation. At 8:45 p.m. Monday, the vacant house at 41 E. Boston Ave. on the South Side was deliberately set on fire in at least three spots, reports show. Damage was set at $3,000. A kitchen fire at 482 Madera Ave. on the North Side at 9 p.m. Monday caused about $9,000 damage, the fire department said. The owner told firefighters that oil from cooking french fires ignited and set the cabinets on fire. No injuries were reported. The Red Cross was called to help the occupants.

Food pantry at church

EAST PALESTINE — Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, corner of Grant and Walnut streets, will have a food pantry from 9:30 to 11 a.m. today. All people living in East Palestine School District and having limited income are welcome to come for food assistance. Recipients should use the Walnut Street office entrance.

Truck, heater stolen

AUSTINTOWN — A 1998 pickup truck and a portable heater were stolen from Renew Roofing, 168 South Meridian Road, the owner of the business reported Sunday. The owner said someone broke in between noon Saturday and noon Sunday, damaging a door and two outside gates. The burglar also rummaged through two offices. The truck was driven out of the building, into a fenced-in area and through two locked gates, a police report said.

Carbon monoxide death

VIENNA — The Trumbull County Coroner’s Office has ruled that a 79-year-old Vienna Township man died accidentally of carbon monoxide poisoning. Edward Gossick was found Monday afternoon in the living room of his Crew Hood Road home by relatives. Township Fire Chief Richard Brannon said the relatives had talked to him by phone over the weekend and found him dead when they checked on him. The chief said a faulty furnace may have caused the death. He suggested than anyone who uses fossil fuel as a heat source install a carbon monoxide detector.

Missing Akita dog

YOUNGSTOWN — A black and white Akita the owner said is worth $1,500 was taken from the 900 block of Katherine Avenue by someone who may be familiar with the dog. The owner told police she found the dog missing about 7:30 p.m. Monday when she went to bring the animal into the house from a chain near the garage.

Used-book sale

NORTH LIMA — There will be a used-book sale from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at South Range High School cafeteria. There are more than 6,000 books of every kind for sale, and most are $1 or less. There also will be a bake sale and T-shirts for sale. The ReadStrong, LiveStrong book sale is Kortney Kersten’s senior project, and all money collected will be donated to the LiveStrong Foundation for cancer research.

Trumbull GOP meeting

WARREN — The Trumbull County Republican Party will meet at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Mocha House restaurant, 467 High St. This will be the final time for Republicans to hear from candidates running for office on Tuesday’s primary election ballot.
