Mahoning Co. Sheriff’s Department announces new senior services program

Sheriff Randall A. Wellington announced a new senior services program “for those who wander.” The program includes the sheriff’s department dive team and U.S. SARR, the search, rescue/recovery corps. These tips were offered for seniors’ residential facilities:

Activate a lock-down procedure.

Do a quick walk through check to locate the missing person.

Place a call to the search/recovery emergency dispatch number (866) 387-7277.

Have one person assigned as facility search coordinator with full authority.

Begin a detailed search of the facility. No door is to be left unopened.

Locate as many witnesses as possible.

Protect the missing person’s living space so as to not contaminate items that may be used as scent articles.

Locate the person’s “wanderer’s report,” (a form that gives details, including physical description), check for current photo.

Check the immediate grounds of the facility, including any vehicles.
