Firefighter wounded at house fire

YOUNGSTOWN — A fire department lieutenant was treated at a hospital for a forehead wound he received at the scene of a vacant house fire at 50 Ellenwood Ave. Monday afternoon. The firefighter struck his head on a hose coupling, reports show.

The first floor of the house was fully engulfed when crews arrived around 5 p.m. and, for safety reasons, the South Side structure was allowed to burn down. Damage was set at $5,000, a total loss. The cause is under investigation.

At 8:45 p.m. Monday, the vacant house at 41 E. Boston Ave. on the South Side was deliberately set on fire in at least three spots, reports show. Damage was set at $3,000.

A kitchen fire at 482 Madera Ave. on the North Side at 9 p.m. Monday caused about $9,000 damage, the fire department said. The owner told firefighters that oil from cooking French fires ignited and set the cabinets on fire. No injuries were reported. The Red Cross was called to get the occupants a place to stay temporarily.
